Re: Contradicting statements

Last night Courtney called Joel from Honora pearls by the wrong name. Woman Surprised They just can't seem to get their act together in many instances. Contradictions and "tall stories" about what they can or can't wear ... think " I usually don't like shoes, tanks, earrings, food, the weather" etc. Woman Tongue but in this case Woman Tongue .... , or what they do or do not own abound.

Re: Contradicting statements

contradictory remarks just makes the host appear insincere in everything she/he says about a product....and it makes you wonder if anything they are sayig is true!.

my point of view is how many people do you know can talk (like the hosts on these shopping channels) for hours about the same items day in and day out! I couldn't do it so that's why I think they "embellish the personal stories" or go off on other tangents.

For instance, I know I couldn't talk non stop for 25 minutes +/- on Poo-Pourri 😉 Or some of the other products that are self-explanatory after 5 minutes-clothing, Josie Maran, toothbrush, foot scrapers (🙄), can openers, Vitamix, & more!

And TSV are like "infomercials"! Gotta fill those hour slots & more!

Now if they are not giving accurate info on product, i.e., warranty, specifications then I'd be upset.

Gotta give them a lot of credit cuz I'm sure the host is just as bored as we are of course they are getting paid big $$$$!

IMO none of that has anything to do with blatantly lying and misleading viewers.  At the very least, they should get their story straight and stick with it.  Otherwise, they're just being lazy.  It's ridiculous when they say, for example, that they only use one line of skincare - and then the next day they're swearing loyalty to another!  I understand the need to make things personal because after all they want us to feel as though we're all friends, just one big happy family, and of course they would never mislead us!

But I think they should stick to describing the product, and keep the personal stuff to a minimum, especially because we know that most of it isn't real anyway.  And I would far rather hear the dimensions of a handbag than another boring story about a host's daughters or whatever else they go on and on about.

You said you couldn't talk on-air for 25 minutes, and I get that.  But I can (and I have), and many other people can too.  I work in television, so I know very well that not everyone is cut out for that.  However, the hosts CAN do that, and in fact it is their job.  A good host knows how to present a product while still remaining at least somewhat credible.

@NYC Susan

point well taken as I don't view QVC hosts as anything but a sales rep (really just flick or online view over the past year).  If I do tune in it's briefly to see the item.

This Christmas purchased 1 item which had to go back (at my return cost). I did not watch the presentation but the recipient did & they showed this compressor could inflate 4 tires...NOT! Lucky it could inflate a swim tube!!! Yes, I'm annoyed but it's not that important Yet what gets me is the "scare tactics", I happened to tune in briefly & Leah was selling the carbon monoxide item and a

video with Pat James was shown how this item saved her life and the other is the RIFD wallet - Every host has had  "identity theft" happen to them or someone they know🙄🤔

if the hosts were delivering the news I would expect it to be accurate but they are selling a product - and normally before I buy I read all the reviews & spec.

I applaud you to be able to to talk for 25+ minutes -- it's something I've done in a presentation but not on the sales level. And YES they should be credible no matter what the bottom line is (sales) as millions of viewers tune in.  Thank you for pointing this out!

Have a great weekend!

Re: Contradicting statements

I don't listen to what the salespeople say, beyond specifics of measurements or whatever. In fact, I don't sit and watch qvc but flip by every so often. If I am looking for something, I go online. If I happen to flip by qvc and see that the item or shoe topic is of interest, I go to the website. Just don't listen to the sales pitch.

Well, they are sales reps, but they're also on-air talent.  Being able to speak for long periods of time on-air, improvise, make conversation, etc, is all part of their jobs.  Not every sales rep should be on TV, even if they're very good at what they do.

I disagree that they don't have to be accurate because they're not reporting news.  They should not be misrepresenting what they're selling.  Some exaggeration is to be expected ("This is the most BEAUTIFUL handbag I've ever seen!!" or "Her skin looks radiant!")  But telling backstories that are contradictory and making ridiculous claims is irresponsible and lazy.  And most potential customers see right thru that stuff, so it's also foolish.

I hope I didn't mislead you, but I've never been on-air in a sales capacity.  I have been on-air many times, though..  I love it, but I know that lots of people become intimidated when they think of all the people watching at home!  Live TV is exciting to me, but seems like a fate worse than death to others!  :-)

Thanks for your good wishes.  My weekend has been a little odd so far, but I'm working on turning that around.  I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend as well!

Re: Contradicting statements

Maybe one of the solutions is for QVC not to repeat items so often, especially the TSV in the same show....and sometimes the presentations can be way too long and seem to drag and host/vendor run out of things to say.....perhaps this makes the host stretch to fill time and comeup with contradictory statements....

They all have "pre-packaged" little stories that they use to sell stuff.  Apparently the host forgot her story for that item.  Like the host with "bad feet" who got the promotion and started wearing all those super cool, high end designer shoes.  Super high heels.  And suddenly her "bad feet" stories were a thing of the past.  Don't believe everything that comes out of their mouths.  That's not a criticism, it's just being realistic.
