Colored envelopes.

[ Edited ]

We recently sent our 14 yr-old grandson a birthday card. It had a blue envelope. He called to thank us for the card, but I think he was also checking to see if we had sent a gift card inside...the card arrived ripped open on top. No, we were sending an electronic giftcard on his actual birthday which was a few days later. Thank goodness! Once again, this is a reminder not to send anything in colored envelopes if it contains money or giftcards. A thief can feel giftcards inside an envelope, and will target any colored envelope thinking it is a birthday card with money inside. This info is from our postman, who has seen workers in the area postal terminal comb through piles of letters and card-sized mail, pulling out any colored envelopes to check for giftcards.
If you aren't giving the gift card in person, consider sending an e-giftcard via email. My grandkids prefer it.

“The majority of postal employees are hard-working public servants dedicated to moving mail to its proper destination,” U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General Special Agent in Charge Imari R. Niles said. “Unfortunately, McAllister decided to betray the public’s trust and steal from postal customers. This plea demonstrates that USPS OIG special agents take these cases seriously, and that postal employees who steal mail are throwing away their careers and could end up in jail.”

This is the reason this almost never happens. Why is this postal worker telling you this, and not reporting it?

Interesting.  We have had a conversation with UPS employees along the same line.  Just say, someone orders a case of wine.  Just say, the wine is in the terminal. Just say, the carton is damaged, as is one or so bottles of wine.  Damaged goods, right?  The intended customer will not get that particular carton of wine.  So, who gets the remaining , "in good shape" bottles of wine?  Someone who works at UPS.  It is not going to the customer.  It is not going back to the wine seller.   We have been told that the damage has been done on purpose.  Yes, this happened to us!  So, we were "made whole."  The wine seller shipped us new product.  Meanwhile...someone at the UPS terminal got some bottles of good wine..free.

Oh, my.  I hadn't thought of red envelopes.

My gosh.

I recall (a couple of years ago or so) sending red enveloped holiday cards, and luckily without any money or gift cards.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

I always sent gift cards to family members.

I finally found out they were stolen.

The clerk at the post office told me to put everything in a larger envelope.

It costs more to mail it but they get it that way.

Anymore, I just shake my head at what goes on in this country.

Very sad.

It is reported all the time and the fact it happens is well-known. Our grandson's card arrived ripped open, but no way to know where it happened. I was surprised it made it through three states in that condition, so suspect it happened after it arrived in OK. I am just thankful we had not sent a gift card in it. My neighbor sent a check to her daughter in a pink-enveloped birthday card a few years ago. The card made it, the check did not. Not a new problem, but I didn't realize the colored envelopes were such a red flag until our postal worker mentioned it.

You can also consider sending a giftcard via email. Go to the store you want online and there may be an option for an e giftcard. The recipient gets it within a few minutes or you can choose the time or date you want it to be sent.

I have had jewelry mailed to me in them and it was t open but it was smashed.
