Re: Coffee maker for college student?? Advice??

Dorm rooms are small and I know how kids live--don't get her ANYTHING but something with pods or k-cups so she can brew and go. ASK if you can what you should idea, she may have something in mind. She needs single cup convenience and nothing to fool with cleaning up after.

I would NOT saddle a dorm resident with grounds and filters and such. Versimos are not common, so the pods or whatever they use would probably be more difficult for her to replenish.

I can guarantee you she will NOT spend as much money on k-cups as she would at Starbucks!

The small four cup Mr. Coffee makes sense, unless the issue is more about what's trending than it is about a cup of coffee...

Re: Coffee maker for college student?? Advice??

Thanks everyone! After talking with her about it and doing some research, I think we've decided just to give her a generous gift card to Starbucks. I haven't read anything 100% positive, about any of the brands I looked at. Some people seem happy with them, some don't. DH asked a few people that he works with about the machines they have (mostly Keurigs) and got "meh" they're ok responses. The pods for the Verismo seem very expensive (vs. the Keurig), when I checked pricing on those and because DD likes lattes, she'd want the milk pods also, which is an additional cost and kind of pricey. So, after talking with DH about it, I think we are just going to give a gift card for now.

I think that's what I paid for mine! lol

I used to have a very nice Farberware percolater and it died. I haven't replaced it, I just have a cheap Mr. Coffee that I use. I don't make coffee every day. I think the most attractive thing about the single cup makers (to me anyway) would be that you could have a different flavor of coffee every day, that variety would be great. But the more I read about leaking and all the issues with this cup won't fit that model and the cost of the cups, I think well gosh would it really be that cost effective. And she really does like hanging out in the coffee shop. She takes her laptop in there and sits and does her work. So I'm not sure that she'd use it as much as she thinks she would if she had her own coffee maker. So I think we will just go with a gift card for now.

Re: Coffee maker for college student?? Advice??

Count me as someone who doesn't need the Keurig. I like using my own ground coffee and I also just make one cup at a time so a single cup brew machine does wonders for me. I feel it is greener because I am not disposing plastic kcups in landfills. I own "The Scoop" by Hamilton Beach. It costs around $40 but you can find cheaper one serving models by Black and Dekker for around $15-20 dollars. If she is living alone, that's the best way to go.

Hamilton Beach makes a single-serve coffeemaker called The Scoop.....no pods.....you use whatever coffee you like. DH loves it and wanted no part of a Keurig. The Scoop has its own filter....no mess....DH keeps his coffee in a L&L so it really is no muss, no fuss. They sell this model at Walmart now I think.....I bought ours at Kohls...it was very inexpensive.

I will second this one. I had a small 4 cup in college, which was cheap and worked, but it wasn't as fast as the Keurig type ones. I have a Keurig and love it, but I use the filters that you can use your own grind with and drink it every day. When It goes, I'll get the scoop, mainly because they did the whole issues with trying to make you use their cups and not a filter you can fill. I have an old Hamilton Beach Brew Station at work that I use all day because I drink more coffee there than at home. I also have an old fashioned stove percolator, an electric percolator and and electric kettle that I use with my Aeropresso for nice strong coffee and lattes. I use each depending upon my mood at night and on the weekends, but the Keurig is used each morning because I'm in a hurry to get out the door. Here is the Aeropress. Product Details You can find it on Amazon. You can find videos on youtube, but it only requires hot water from your kettle and makes a great latte with vanilla and cream!

This one allows her to use pods, grounds, or cups, so she can choose which ever she likes to use. I probably get the Hamilton beach scoop because of the option but if basic is what you want, these two are basic.

OH boy...Look what I have found for home made lattes even easier. I'll be treating myself to this for Christmas. There is a video review on how to use it and why some people have the issues they have. You can't leave it turned on all the time due to the heating element in the bottom of the pot if it is empty, but that is a problem with regular coffee makers too! It uses regular coffee grounds, your choice of milks, and your choice of flavorings if you like.
