Hamilton Beach makes a single-serve coffeemaker called The Scoop.....no pods.....you use whatever coffee you like. DH loves it and wanted no part of a Keurig. The Scoop has its own filter....no mess....DH keeps his coffee in a L&L so it really is no muss, no fuss. They sell this model at Walmart now I think.....I bought ours at Kohls...it was very inexpensive.

I love The Scoop. I've had it for about a year or so, and I'm very happy with it.

Highly, highly recommend!

Black and Decker is a pretty good brand. I was out of state for quite awhile and had use of the first Hamilton Beach SS, I thought it was the worst one I've ever used, the coffee just seemed week. The next pod one is showing up in motels and it seemed to be decent coffee it was really hot coffee.

Re: Coffee maker for college student?? Advice??

I'm not a fan of pod coffeemakers, not just because of the waste created by those plastic cups, but because I find the coffee weak and lukewarm.

Earlier this year I did an exhaustive search for a new coffeemaker. I had an expensive one from a prestige brand, but the paper liner kept folding over while brewing and it never made a hot cup of rich coffee, so I looked for a different sort of technology.

I stumbled across Bonavita at Amazon and found great (really amazing) reviews for a brand I'd never heard of, so I bought it. Best coffeemaker ever. Instead of dispensing the water through one hole, it rains water over the entire filter so all the grounds get evenly wet. It also heats the water to a higher temperature so the oils in the coffee are extracted. The result is a smooth, flavorful and very hot cup of coffee. Works well for 4 cups or for an entire pot.

Highly recommended.

Is the Verismo the Starbucks one?? I would highly recommend the Keurig. I've never owned the personal size, so perhaps do some review-hunting not that particular size, but we love and adore our Keurig.
