Cicadas are referred to as locusts. Katydids are entirely different things.

I am in Illinois. We will be blessed with both types of cicadas.
Will be interesting to see what it will be like!😳😳😳😳

Ive lived places where they really created a din on hot summer afternoon but I've never noticed them where I live now near Albuquerque. Of course my neighborhood isn't exactly Sherwood Forest.

@RedTop I did ask that question of the entomologist from university...he said no a cicada is NOT a locust. A locust is more like a grasshopper that swarms...ewwww

@4kitties We got one of those green bugs inside the house one time. They make a horrible sound. I smashed it good with a fly swatted.

Speaking for many here in WV, we're still probably going to always refer to cicadas as locusts; one of those situations where we've always said it and that's just how we remember it things. Even if we're not exact, locusts sounds better than what we usually say which is "those dam ugly red-eyed b*****ds!"

We're not expecting them in NOLA - thank goodness.

About a third of my yard is heavy woods. We have lots of critters and bugs. I like to listen to the Katydids, crickets and other bugs "sing" at night. Also love the lightening bugs.
We have some large moths and walking stick bugs and praying mantis too.

They say locusts can eat up a corn field in no time flat or is it wheat field. Some crop. They have been written up from Bibical times on up to present day.
