@stevieb , I think OPs "invitation" was levity.
Mine doesn't say invitation, but instructions, with all the ways I can obtain help if needed, plus a reminder that my response to the survey is required by law.

@x Hedge Nope, it wasn't just the OP being humorous. So help me, and I quote: "This is your invitation to respond to the 2020 Census"... And yes, then they go on from there to give your code, instructions and advise you of the requirement to respond... The 'invitation' seems sort of laughable...

I recieved the long version of the census years ago, only answered a few of the questions & returned it so it's real...unfortunately.

@stevieb ,
In that case, I'll bet they tested groups, and got the best follow through/cooperation using invitation.
That's must be on the regular census. I was referring to the other one OP received from the census bureau.

@x Hedge ???
Please read a bit more carefully. I responded to @CARMIE post above. You can see what she said, some were sent out from a party.
I did NOT say anything about yours, or your envelope, or where it came from.

@Carmie wrote:I too, received a "census" some time ago in the mail. My husband told me to " fill it out and return it."
When I looked at it up close and personal, it was from the headquarters of the political party we are registrated with. It was not a real USA census.
The political party is collecting data about their constituents. I just tossed it out.
The real census can be done online. That one I did complete a few days ago.
I always read everything in it's entirety before I give out info. Some things we receive are misleading.
FYI

Oh, I'm terribly sorry, @Drythe .
I have switched 2 names on 2 posts.

"Invitation"...that is the exact word the USCB uses to describe the letter they give you which contains that code you use to fill out their questionnaire. It should really should be called a "notice" imo.

I disregarded this because Carmie's not referring to a mailing from the Census Bureau.
The U. S. Census Bureau did send out a legitimate mailing a few months ago.
OP received it, as did I.
I was simply attempting to reassure @wonderfulworld this earlier one was legit, and not a scam as other posters may have concluded since it wasn't sent to everyone.

Received the same thing. Haven't done it yet.
