From Google:
The newly elected Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost, has connections to Haiti and New Orleans, with Creole and Black ancestry. His maternal grandparents, Joseph Martinez and Louise Baquie, were married in New Orleans and had Haitian roots. Prevost's mother, Mildred Martinez, was born in Chicago but her parents were from New Orleans and had ties to both Haitian and Creole communities.

People I know, or have met from South America usually refer to themselves as Peruvian, Brazilian etc. . in the United States, we are states of one country. I am an American who lives in California. In South America, they are Republics or countries. South Americans are not all Brazilians or Peruvians. I think. lol. Too deep for me this time of night lol

@shoekitty Pope Leo is American by birth and a naturalized Peruvian Citizen by choice.
At this time in his life he has spent more time in his ministerings Away from the U.S.A. than within it.
He is the first "North American" Pope.
Pope Francis was from South America. Born in Argentina.
At His Holiness introduction and blessing to the people, he spoke Italian, Spanish and Latin. A man (now Pope) of the World, Not "too American".
It's Not "What a man IS , It's" what that man Does" that counts.

Just glad the hoopla is over. Now we can hopefully move on to other things.

I just learned that the new Pope grew up around my old stomping grounds. He was just at a well known pizza place in the area last year and there's a group photo to confirm it. Not only that, his father was in education and was the superintendent of the school district I was in many years ago.

I've really enjoyed all of the coverage and commentary, on television and also here.
Even if one is not Catholic or even religious, the history and background were fascinating to me.
There was so much data and information I wasn't aware of. I appreciate everyone's input about those aspects of this newsworthy, historical event.
