@Lucky Charm  you are probably correct regarding the amount of time he will spend in jail. the young man that killed my father and aunt spent 18 months in jail for killing two people.

@sunshine45  That is so sad about your dad and uncle and even your mom, too.  To have all been involved in that together and the outcome is heartbreaking!

I know someone who killed a 5 year old boy in the street right in front of his house in front of his siblings and other neighborhood kids.

She got one month of solid time and then 6 months of weekends.  She had to report on Friday evening and stay in prison till Sunday evening.

The judge gave her that light sentence because she had an infant son.

She showed no remorse for the death, complained about having to go to prison.

And has worked as a barmaid ever since.  It's her dream job.

Its so sad and these drunks will find a way to beat the system....there was a story on our local news how one drunk had a device on his steering wheel ordered by the court that he had to blow in to make sure he was "clean" well the SOB had a friend blow in to the device and the guy drove drunk and killed someone....

SO very sorry.

Drunk driving should have been dealt with by law harshly enough decades ago.

@Lucky Charm  I know someone who embezzled about nine hundred dollars from the company they worked for. They received the same sentence you just described for someone who killed someone received. Justice certainty isn't fair.

The thing that makes such deaths so tragic is that they're completely preventable.  Drunk driving is the ultimate act of selfishness.  Unfortunately, a drunk loses his ability to reason logically so he climbs behind the wheel.  Society should be protected from such people permanently as they tend to reoffend.  I hope they throw the book at this guy.

Re: CO-WORKER DEAD BECAUSE OF A DRUNK DRIVER

It is very sad and it hits home with me. In 2016 my 35 year old nephew was with his girlfriend driving to the Island. They were hit by a drunk driver. My nephew died and she spent two weeks in ICU unable to attend his funeral. Nothing happened to the drunk driver.

The horrible thing, she had 9 DWI’s prior to this accident. During the two year wait of going to Court she got another one.

She was given 8 years for my nephew and 8 years for his girlfriend to run concurrently. Not enough if you ask me.

Re: CO-WORKER DEAD BECAUSE OF A DRUNK DRIVER

Ugh! I used to work near a guy who would brag about getting drunk on the weekends. And it was pretty clear he didn't do it responsibly.

One time I heard him ask one of his friends, "So you get a dewy?" They even had a shorthand term for DUI. Dewy. I did't understand what it meant until I had it explained to me.

I think they make it home drunk often enough without crashing that they think it can never happen. Even though it's just a matter of statistics and time. And of course no one would be able to convince them otherwise until it's too late. They'd just claim 'freedom.'

It is always heartbreaking to hear about this type of situation.  Such needless loss is hard to comprehend.

Re: CO-WORKER DEAD BECAUSE OF A DRUNK DRIVER

@Jaspersmom  Your story reminded me of a Girl Scout who was killed by a drunk driver when her troop was picking up trash along a highway about 100 miles from me.  They had safety vests on. I immediately thought of it reading your post. It also was in the afternoon. It happened  couple of years ago. I often read in the local paper repeat offenders being cited over and over. Senseless.

My ex husband was picked up once for drunk driving just before he turned into our road He  was followed from the bar. I refused to pick him up from the Police Station. I would not answer the phone. He had to call his sister. Alcohol abuse helped  destroy the marriage . It  is so tragic when alcohol kills an innocent human being.

Re: CO-WORKER DEAD BECAUSE OF A DRUNK DRIVER

[ Edited ]

It's so unfortunate that so many of us have stories of someone that was killed by a drunk driver.   My story was of an incident that happened during the time I lived in Las Vegas.

This drunk driver was a young woman who worked as a cocktail waitress.  Her shift ended at in the early morning hours and at 7:00 AM she was already drunk.  As she was driving home a young boy was waiting for his school bus and a landscaper was working nearby.  The landscapers saw her heading towards the young boy and attempted to pull him out of the way of her speeding car. Unfortunately both he and the young boy were killed by this irresponsible woman.

Aside from this terrible tragedy I was shocked at the number of people who went to bat for this woman.  They tried to blame it on the casinos who provide the drinks and the fact that drinks were available at all hours of the day and night.  As if that was an excuse for her beginning her drunken spree after her shift ended. Most people get off of work and head home to get some sleep. They don't sit in a bar and get so drunk that they don't remember what they did after they got into their car.

MADD was at her trial everyday and fought so hard to get justice for the two souls that she killed.  In the end all she received was a very light sentence and she spent that in prison learning computer science.

Did she learn her lesson and try to make something productive of her life, the answer is no.   Within a short time she returned to the casinos working as a cocktail waitress and I heard from someone who knew her that she continued drinking.

The most disgusting thing about this case was during the trial she sat on the stand and cried about the fact that her car was totaled. She actually had the gall to say how much she loved that car.

I didn't know this woman but in my opinion she should have gone to prison and served years for each person she killed.
