One stick out in a butter boat; the rest in the fridge or freezer.

I started buying sticks of butter from Costco - a couple of sticks go in my plastic butterdish and metal butter dish in the refrigerator. The rest of the butter goes in the freezer.

refrigerator or freezer

i keep and use both sticks and tubs....preferably kerrygold.

the kerrygold in the tub is semi-soft right out of the refrigerator.

I use Kerrygold too and also keep it in a butter boat on the counter. I like warm muffins with ample butter for breakfast.

My mother always buttered the bread when she made sandwiches. Does anyone do that?

@occasionalrain   Yes, my mother did that.  When I got to be old enough--probably around eight years old--I asked her to please not use butter on the ham, ham-bologna, or salami sandwiches and just put mustard on them.

I think in the early years of the twentieth century that was the norm, maybe even earlier than that.  It might have started with a translation of English tea sandwiches;  also I think using butter showed being affluent and when the Great Depression and World War II had ended it was a joy to be able to obtain and afford to use real butter again.

There never was any margarine in my home.

@Nightowlz.  I used the butter boat with water for years.  Then one day I just put the butter in a plastic container with a lid.  Still kept it out on the counter; I see no difference whatsoever.  Butter is still fresh and good.

If you know you are going to use butter, heat water in a pot on the stove, pour into a glass.  Swirl it around in the glass, pour the hot water down the drain and place the glass upside down over the butter and let it stay there a couple of minutes...you now have softened butter.  Oh, you can heat the water in the microwave but the glass will be too hot to handle, safer to heat it on the stove.

@IdahoGram

What's a butter bell?   Never heard of that.
