I love the EPA's advice that you should dispose of them properly - but if your community doesn't have this set up, just throw them in your trash.

I guess some landfills are ok to pollute.

  • Promptly place all bulb debris and cleanup materials, including vacuum cleaner bags, outdoors in a trash container or protected area until materials can be disposed of. Avoid leaving any bulb fragments or cleanup materials indoors.
  • Next, check with your local government about disposal requirements in your area, because some localities require fluorescent bulbs (broken or unbroken) be taken to a local recycling center. If there is no such requirement in your area, you can dispose of the materials with your household trash.

More toxic waste created under the guise of saving money. At least the old bulbs are just glass and some places even recycle them.

Ah yes, the old govt mandated "squiggly" bulbs. {#emotions_dlg.thumbdown} Gotta love it!! Stock up now, the "old-fashioned" 60 watt bulbs are flying off the shelves here. {#emotions_dlg.thumbdown}

Our grandparents and great grandparents didn't have these worries. I think sometimes our technology creates more problems for us than benefits.

I won't use them.

It sounds like a major hassle.

But they are going to quit making them. I don't see any alternative.

Re: Broke a CFL lightbulb.....

I've had two burn out within a matter of months. I thought they were supposed to last a very long time. They weren't even a year old. I have them sitting on a shelf along with a whole jar of dead batteries. Guess I'll have to look up how to dispose of them.

I use some tinfoil and scoop it up and throw it away in the trash {#emotions_dlg.scared} (don't tell the EPA!). I haven't broken one in a long time though. When I was little my parents broke one, I remember my dad putting the mercury in a small glass medicine jar for me to play with. We would shake it up, watch it separate and glob back together. I found it fascinating but he never let me touch it.
