When I was a kid I would purposely break the old glass thermometers so I could play with the mercury. I thought it was so cool. My daughter wasn't born with a third arm or anything so I must not have done enough damage with it.

I use some tinfoil and scoop it up and throw it away in the trash
(don't tell the EPA!). I haven't broken one in a long time though. When I was little my parents broke one, I remember my dad putting the mercury in a small glass medicine jar for me to play with. We would shake it up, watch it separate and glob back together. I found it fascinating but he never let me touch it.
How are you supposed to dispose of it?

Honestly I am not sure, I suppose in some expensive bio-hazard way. I wonder if a doctor's office would take it if you brought it to them in a container? They have all sorts of bio waste, and although they use electronic thermometers now, perhaps they would dispose of it. Maybe not, just a random thought.

Gotta love it!! Stock up now, the "old-fashioned" 60 watt bulbs are flying off the shelves here.
I came in a few weeks ago with 4 boxes. DH said, good Lord women, the hall closet is full

I broke a squiggle bulb yesterday, which I guess is fluorescent. I cleaned it up with my vacuum cleaner. I didn't know I was supposed to do something different. Guess I'm doomed. Shouldn't there be huge blinking warnings on the package if they are THAT much of a hazzard?

Let's shoot it up into space to Mars and let Richard Branson deal with it when he gets his flight up there, he has enough money. Besides, Mars won't feel like "home" to the earthlings without some toxic waste to get them started.

omg I just spit coffee on my keyboard!
How about the Cree? Seems to be selling - expensive, but perhaps a better alternative?

I hate the light emitted from those bulbs. We had some energy efficient report done on our house and the guy that did the ""study"" changed many of our bulbs. First they take forever to come up to full light and then it's as if you are under interrogation they are so bright!

I put a couple of CFL bulbs in my kitchen several years ago. I don't often turn that light on - never liked the color. I have a old china cabinet in the basement full of incandescent bulbs. I can still buy some incandescent bulbs at the store (select wattages) and I do. I am a hoarder
