Re: Breathing in a face mask

I don't like anything around my face and mouth.  I am very claustrophic!!!! I give myself a pep talk each time I leave the house and wear a mask.  So far, I have had enough of the disposable masks and I think they are easier to breathe through.  I get really hot after I wear them for awhile and this does not help.  I have read that the best cloth ones to buy or wear or make are cotton ones.  The synthetic or other blends, are too heavy and do not allow enough air to circulate or something.  Any how --- I am going to have to try and locate some more dispoable masks as I don't think I can handle the cloth masks.  DH has very bad breathing issues and the minute he puts one on, he gets kind of freaked out.  I know it is more psychological than anything.  I tell him, to slow down -- breath slowly, through mouth and try to not concentrate on the mask.  It's not natural and somewhat challenging wearing these, but you do what you have to do!

Re: Breathing in a face mask

@Tink814 .............People can say all the want to but I find wearing a mask makes it hard to breath also.  I dont care what material it is made from.

It sounds to me as though you had a allergic reaction to the 2nd mask, probably due to what the material was treated with.

Try looking around your house for something to make a mask from.  Try putting on scarves to see if you can tolerate their material.  Maybe you have an old thin cotton tee shirt you could try.  Also check out nylon items, some nylon is very thin.

Good luck

Re: Breathing in a face mask

Our apt management asked us to wear face masks in laundry room and elsewhere when we leave our apartment. Not really a big deal in NYC since the city also requires outside. First few days it was an annoyance. I keep it by the door next to my keys - I’m in and out many times during the day. Doesn’t bother me at all. I made mine from old LOGO t-shirts. Jazzy tie-dye.

Yesterday the thought occurred to me ... how do people with bad breath deal with it?

Wearing a mask does effect my breathing and  asthma.I wear one when we are in places where it is required but when in the car pull it down.

[ Edited ]

@Tink814 So much great advice here! I have practice tried wearing a mask around the house and found that mouth breathing works better for me. (I really have not been anywhere since lockdown here in PA except for my front porch and back deck/back yard)

If you are wearing a cloth mask (one that will need to be washed after wearing) maybe you could try putting some Vicks vapor rub under your nose to help you breathe a little better.

Best of luck.

Re: Breathing in a face mask

@Tink814  You are not alone.  I am extremely claustrophobic.  I wear a "face covering" which for me is a Chicago Bears bandana.  Even so I find myself on a verge of a panic attack and only wear it for the absolutely minimum time.  I know I'm a "wimp" but I cannot wear a mask.

Re: Breathing in a face mask

@busymom22  Thanks for the info!  Once this "lockdown" is over and those masks are available to the general public, I plan on buying a few so I'll be ready for the next time.

Re: Breathing in a face mask

Doesn't matter what kind they are they are uncomfortable and difficult to breathe in.  Plus, my face starts to sweat and itch underneath.  Not to mention fogging up my reading glasses.  I bought a mini shaving cream yesterday to see if that really helps with the flasses fogging.  As my glasses fog I find myself breathing harder which makes them fog even more so I can't even see to shop.

The local news did a segment on Salons opening up and my Salon was in the segment talking about how they had a day of training where the stylists took turns doing each other's hair with masks on to get accustomed to it and the limitations before doing it with actual clients.
