Wow! Maybe they need blessings to grant additional grace and peace upon them? Maybe to protect them?
Let me tell you something, our daughter has always brought her horse to the blessing of the pets, about 8 years ago, her then horse was blessed and became ill and died within a week of the blessing. We are members of the Catholic church and practice it daily. It was so comforting to our 9 yr old daughter to know that her horse was blessed. You can call it dumb, but it's what we believe and we welcome all of the blessing we can get.
That's a really nice story. I'm sorry your daughter's horse died, but I totally understand why the blessing made it a little easier on her

PS: Noel, I did not know that San Francisco was named for St. Francis.
Pssst Scottie:
San=Saint
Francisco=Francis
Just picking at ya, Scottie!!!
Plllttttt!!! Raspberries to you cakers!!!
Scottie, CA is famous for the Mission Trail, pretty much from one end of the state to the other.
The missionary priests established missions along the trail, usually one day's travel by horse apart. There are numerous towns and cities around the state named for Saints:
San Jose, San Raphael, Santa Clara, Santa Rosa, St. Helena, San Anselmo, San Bruno, San Carlos, San Leandro, San Mateo, San Pablo, San Ramon, Santa Barbara, and MORE! Whew!

Thanks, Noel! I know all those places but never really thought about the Mission Trail and the reason for all the "San" names.

SF is named for St. Francis of Assisi, Patron Saint of Animals. It's a very important day here
Just read on Wiki that he's Patron Saint of Animals and the Environment.
Didn't know that about San Fran; must be incredible to experience World Animal Day and his birthday there!
