At our church, DH and I always buy the chancel flowers to celebrate his mother's birthday in mid-October. A few years ago, one of our cherished cats passed away. her death broke my heart and I was distraught for a good long time after her passing; it took DH a while, too, as she was our "Queen". Queen of the cat clan, Queen of the entire house. She had us all, cats and humans, completely wrapped around that velvet paw of hers.

That year, instead of the chancel flowers celebrating my MIL's birthday, we gave the flowers in celebration of the life of our cherished kitty and the lives of all pets. We filled out the form with what we wanted it to say and the church bulletin that Sunday offered the chancel flowers in honor of the life of our Queen B and all animals.

We thought we might get some snotty comments from some of the members of the church, but we didn't care. It's what we wanted (and needed, actually) to do to honor our little one. When my MIL read the bulletin, she got tears in her eyes and gave us each a hug....she knew what that cat meant to us.

To our surprise, people came up after the church service and told us how wonderful the reason for the chancel flowers was, that it was a beautiful tribute to the animals. Nobody said anything snotty, to us anyway.
