I love Bill Maher and John Oliver. Unfortunately, I no longer have HBO. Wonder if Xfinity will have any special deals on it soon?

PS, I just watched the New Rules segment and also some of the discussion on YouTube. I thought Bill had a point with his remarks about MJ versus all the prescription drugs that float freely and legally in our systems. Many doctors feels that the real killers are prescription drugs like Oxy and not the herbs. I also heard Cho's comment and her explanation of it. I understand that completely, and I also understand Anna's reaction having come from a country which has had its share of war criminals. I did NOT see that Anna was upset at all by the toking...if in fact it was even MJ.

Ok, I watched the episode.   First of all, I was not familiar with ANY of the three on the panel.  The lady had some rather 'off' things to say but I guess she believed what she was saying so I cannot begrudge her that.

Of course, I'm familiar with Richard Engel (love him!) and that was interesting.   He's an amazing journalist - and very brave!

I'm also familiar with Margaret Cho as a comedian.   For one second I must be hideously superficial and remark that I just don't like her super short hair.  It's not working on her for me.  That said, it's none o my business.  Smiley Happy

As for her 'war criminal' remark, for some reason I had this impression that she went on a rant about that.  She made the remark and explained why she felt that way so I was not offended by it.  Her reasoning was legit but maybe another term would apply, but I didn't feel like she was that far off at all.

As for firing up the doobie - I guess if they can, they can.   I'd like to think that he made the guests aware, up front, that that was going to occur so I imagine they could be ok with it or leave.   I would be shocked if that were not known ahead of time.

Tell ya what - I've done my own share of weed smoking in the past (haven't done so for at well over a decade, however) and I was hoping they might pass it my way.  Smiley Happy   Now that I live with 24/7 pain, I'd be curious as to if it could help me with my pain.  No, really.  Well, ok - plus, getting high is fun.  hehe

I like Bill Maher and if you noticed last night he mentioned several times tha he had a prescription for pot from his Dr.  That being said I dont think it was real anyway.  Much to smoky.  I was more upset with Margaret Cho and her crack about GB being a war criminal. Totally uncalled for.  I dont care what your politics are..is there no respect for the office anymore?  These people say these stupid things to be controversial and get press.  Common sense and respect has gone out the window.  You may not agree with his politics but he was our president.

please have your fun getting high in your own house, hopefully never behind the wheel of a car. I knew lots of people back in the day having "fun" that caused harm to others. No different from the "high" one gets from a couple stiff drinks.

I have no idea who John Oliver is .... is he  primarily a comedian?

British born John Oliver began his American TV career on Jon Stewart's show. Now he has a half hour HBO program on Sundays at 11pm. He's very good...clever, irreverent, incisive. His wife is an Iraq war veteran. I believe he recently became an American citizen.

As for Bill Maher, I agree with him a majority of the time but to paraphrase Shakespeare, I think he doth protest too much when it comes to pot. He seems to have the same zeal for legalizing pot as he does for dealing with climate change. I don't put those two issues in the same category of importance. I also disagree with his opinion on vaccination, which is wholly unscientific.

Bill always has at least one conservative on his panel each week. Many are repeat guests. The Republican woman who's a Jeb Bush supporter has been on before. Obviously Bill wants to create discussion, disagreement, and debate on his show. Diverse guests make for lively exchanges. Sometimes things get out of hand and Bill doesn't mind if his jokes and his comments offend. That's part of his shtick. His previous show was called "Politically Incorrect" so you know where he's coming from.

Chickenbutt, I can only speak from my own experience. I am 45 and hadn't smoked it since my 20s until I was diagnosed with Crohns disease. I was experiencing severe pain and nausea that my meds weren't handling. I had lost an extreme amount of weight (I am 5'10" and under 100lbs) and my GI dr at UNC suggested pot for not only pain but nausea. I was taking 6 10 mg oxycodone a day because of the pain. Needless to say those are extremely addictive. I started smoking during flares in 2011. It helped a great deal with both my pain and nausea. It is also a natural anti-inflammatory which is great because my intestines were inflamed and it helped with that. Everyone is different but it really helped me a lot and I was able to cut back to one to two percocet a day, then finally none.

Alcohol is the biggest gateway drug there is. That isn't opinion, but fact. Do you want that to be illegal?

I can understand how you feel and have sympathy for you but do we make alcohol illegal because of those who misuse it?

Apples and Oranges. How did prohibition work out? Last time I checked, smoking pot wasn't/isn't considered a disease, alcohol? Yes. Alcohol consumption is legal in every state. Pot? Nope.

For every study that says alcohol is the BIGGEST gateway drug? I can find you 2 or more that give that title to pot. Hey, I don't care what any adult choose to do to their 1 and only body, except when it intersects with mine. Puff away.

I personally have chosen not to smoke, legally or illegally. I also choose to not drink alcohol. To compare pot(which will linger into my face and lungs if in my vicinity, to alcohol that has zero effect when in that same vicinity? Apples and Oranges.

Alcohol has zero effect if you're not on the same road with a drunk driver or are a battered spouse, etc., etc.  I know what you're saying, John, but I thought I'd add my two cents worth!

Why would you feel the need to tell her to get high in her own home and not behind a wheel. Would you say the same thing to a poster here who mentioned she was having a glass of wine or some other cocktail while typing here on the boards? My guess is no,  so why would feel the need to remind an adult to not smoke weed and drive? Just because you knew lots of people who got high.drank and drove doesn't mean this poster or anyone else here does. How condescending.

@Irshgrl31201 I feel the need to speak out about many things and don't need your permission. I thought someone saying publicly that they enjoyed getting high was an invitation for someone else who thinks it is not okay to speak their mind as well.

People who get "silly" drunk and high and then drive are foolish and yet they do it every day, so what difference does it make if they get high from a different drug of choice and then make a foolish mistake.,

Condescending? I think not. Ironic that the entire thread is about a man who hosts a show about being politically incorrect, does things that offend people (some) and causes a lot of controversy and has a lot of support from posters, yet if a poster on the forum says something in the same vein, they get called out for it.

IMO marijuana does often lead to other hard core drugs and when someone admits to using it to get high, well, then I will speak my feelings as well. Don't  like it? Don't care. You don't need to police my opinions.
