His attorney says he'll "live with a friend" and" support himself on SS and Medicare", so taxpayers would still be supporting him and his medical care.
@KingstonsMom Like taxpayers are supporting many here?
Yes, but we're not criminals serving life in prison, whining to get out for medical reasons.
@KingstonsMom The point was who would be supporting him...not what he did or wants.

I see nothing to be gained in keeping him in prison at taxpayer's expense.
@occasionalrain I am agreeing with you to a point-because there were people who had millions to invest. Some investments were made out of greed. When people have more money to last over several lifetimes, the $ sign continues to rule rational thinking in some cases.
There have also been investors who never came forward to declare losses; money that was never reported to the IRS, money gained illegally (drug dealing) or other money that was being laundered.
As far as his release, I doubt it will happen. Regardless of being a criminal, taxpayers will pay one way or another for his care.

@KingstonsMom ??? I'm not following your logic. He is supported by tax $$ as a prisoner and would receive taxpayer funded SS and Medicare if released.
I doubt he will be released but either way tax $$ supports him.

My logic is aimed at another post (#14) that said we should let him out rather than the taxpayers pay for his confinement and medical costs.
My point is like yours, either way the taxpayers pay for him.

Did he have any compassion for the people he ripped off?

I will always believe that you do the crime then you do the time.I am sure he knew the risks but his unfortunate victims did not.

Exactly but if he is released then he chooses how to spend his time and the taxpayers money.I think he gave up his right to those options.

Maybe he should be given a trophy, award or something.
So courageous.
[sarcasm]

Let them keep his dusty backside in jail.
Let's just say I have as much compassion for him as he had for the people he scammed.

@KingstonsMom It doesn't matter he is a convicted criminal. That seems to be the sticking point.
Whether it be Bernie or the other millions of people collecting who are not incarcerated - if he is able to collect SS and Medicare when released, then collect he will.
I'm reading that people say his status as a convicted criminal should determine how his medical care is paid.
