@Anonymous032819  I know they have always been used in the NY subways. Don't know if they still are.

What is surrounding the shower/tub area?

@magicmoodz above the shower is wall...smooth surface, and at the front end of the shower is a floor to ceiling is cupboard.

The back end of the shower, is an outside wall.

So you don't have to coordinate tile--that makes it easier. I am a fan of subway tile but am conflicted about installing above beadboard. I might opt for grasscloth in this instance.

If you or someone you hire paints the walls with a roller that gives a slight stippling would that cover the imperfections?

I too have an older home with lots of places where the walls need help. I find that using a roller seems to hide. most of the problems.

@hennypenny   I used a roller to paint the walls after the skim coat was put on, was not aware of a roller that gives a stipped finish.    I will never agree to smooth walls again...lesson learned.

White subway tile would match the white walls, and set off the pretty green beadboard nicely. In order to not look too busy, l would use white grout with the tiles, for a tone-on-tone effect. And l would use sealer on the grout, to keep it from getting dirty. Good luck. Your bathroom sounds lovely.
