@colliegirlsSo interesting how chains vary from place to place.  I shopped my local Bassett a few weeks back, even told them I was looking for furniture for an apartment elsewhere and still got great service.

But I know exactly what you mean.  Some years ago, I was car shopping and had narrowed my search online and now wanted to sit in cars, drive cars before buying.  I went into a local Infinity dealer, walked from one end of the showroom to another without one person so much as looking at me.  Because I was wearing jeans?  Because I was a woman alone?

I don't know, but I do know, I got back into my car and drove toward home.  I stopped on the way at a Toyota dealer and bought a car that same afternoon.

It doesn't take a whole lot to make me feel welcomed.  "May I help you with anything?" would have been a good start!

Ever purchased....1982 is when I bought a wood bedroom pieces from Bassett. My daughter still has them in her bedroom since she was a baby. They have held up well, through many military PCS's.

Last year we were looking for living room wood tables and cabinet, we looked at some Bassett in all tiers of quality and prices; the wood veneers used are very thin. Even Thomasville, which we own in our current bedroom set from 1992, is not like it used to be.

For upholstery furniture, the Flexsteel we have is holding up well.

I could not find Canadel wood pieces here. I like this brand.

So, we are refinishing/refurbishing our late 80's tables, instead. They are solid oak/walnut with a bit of glass; it has lasted through moves, too.

Our bedroom set is 54 years old, DH bought the year before we were married.  Our end tables in LR are 53 years old and Dr table 52 years.  QUALITY furniture was made back, not anymore unless you want to pay into the thousands.  We bought a new sofa and loveseat that seemed very well made, but turned out to have cardboard arms. Holy Cow!!!  Talk about ******.  Too late to have any recourse.  If possible, buy an old piece of furniture and have it recovered, repainted, or stained.----------tedEbear

Same here and when she was old enough we replaced the crib with a Basset head and footboard.  The top of one dresser has a few dents and dings in it but it's going on 28 years old so it's to be expected.

I had the same experience that you did at a car dealer @millieshops.  I went to a Toyota dealer and had to ask someone to help me.  He reluctantly unlocked the car that I wanted to see outside.  He was very condescending.  I was going out to dinner with my friend that night and wanted her to see the car.  We pulled in in her Jaguar, and the same salesman ran out to help her.  I went to the Nissan dealership the next day and bought a Maxima.  This was about fifteen years ago.  I was so mad.

I have Bassett tables (cocktail & end tables) from 1990.  They look brand new.  They were good furniture then.  I don't know about now.  For sofa & chairs the best furniture maker IMHO would be Flexsteel.  I have a sofa, love seat, chair in my family room, which is used & misused, since 2000.  The fabric looks wonderful.  I may redo the fabric in time.  I am kinda over sage green print.  But if I wait long enough it may come back in style.

I seem to remember the crib as being Bassett.

Anyone remember Burlington furniture? Our bedroom set is still going strong over 30 years.

I have no experience with Basset but if you are looking for upholstery pieces which will last 25+ years, Hancock and Moore cannot be beat.  The one I own is about 15 years old and looks new.  I may, one day, reupholster it but only because I might want a different color fabric.

Henredon's wood pieces are, again, something which will stand the test of time.    I have a Henredon curio cabinet and buffet that my mother purchased in the 60's.  She chose well.  They are a streamlined style which still looks modern today.  My DH and I purchased a Henredon bedroom set with simple lines in 1976 which we still use today.  Still beautiful.

I am currently looking for end tables and a cocktail table for my family room to replace the Thomasville junk I purchased less than 10 years ago. This time, I am planning on buying old Henredon, Baker or Drexel Heritage pieces which I will have refinished to my specifications.  This furniture is quite expensive to purchase new (well worth it if you can spend more, however) but it is relatively easy and inexpensive to find on the used market.  Even after paying for refinishing, the cost will be well below what I would have to pay for good quality new furniture.

Good luck with your search.

I have a Drexel bedroom set I bought over 40 years ago and it is still going strong.  Hopefully it is still made as well.

Has anyone ever purchased furniture from Bassett?  We have a local store, and I am in the market for new living room furniture.  Any comments about service or quality? TIA.

@Peaches McPhee  I bought a hutch with sideboard a few years ago and it is really nice.  The wrong hinges were sent, about three times, but finally the correct arrived, it was installed, and I was refunded the $!00 delivery charge for my inconvenience.
