I have a question for the English teachers - do you say ""she's older than me"" or ""she's older than I""? I was having a disagreement with someone the other day about that one.

Rules change over the years, but I was taught it is "She's older than I" because it is the implied "She's older than I am."

Thanks RCG. I was taught that way, too, but the other person was saying you only use "I" if you do add the word "am" at the end. Hey, he's young so maybe the rule did change.

Perhaps, but I doubt it. Many in the 20 something generation and younger use "me" as a subject of a sentence and think it's perfectly fine. "Me and my boyfriend went to the grand opening." I hate to say it, but often the rules change over time because of misuse. Suddenly the wrong way becomes the established norm. That's why we tolerate such words as "irregardless" which is at best a double negative and at worst a non word.

LOL. Well, at least you can excuse the fact that French is not the established language here.

One thing I should add is that I don't always speak as I write. I'm much more casual in conversation with friends and family.

Then there's the "to and too" problem. Or how about the use of "I" when it should be "me"? For example, "She went to the store with Jane and I" when it should be "She went to the store with Jane and me". After all, you wouldn't say "She went to the store with I", would you?

There's also the "your" vs "you're" problem, along with "there" vs "their" vs "they're."

I constantly see the misuse of "your" and "you're" in comment sections at youtube. It's maddening.
