Re: Autocorrect -- the end of writing property...

Let us not put all this on the young. I've seen all these mistakes and more in posts here. I don't think the majority of posters on these boards are school kids!

I chuckled at this snippet of a review for a pair of slippers. A common misspelling but it didn't make much sense, either. ""I wore them for one morning around my house. By the end of the day the heals were falling apart."

When I taught in college, the English adjunct faculty member shared a poignant excerpt from his student's essay. He chronicled the life changing event, when his uncle died of "phenomenon." {#emotions_dlg.lol}

I'm an English major and a 30 year English and Journalism teacher. Don't get me started on the state of grammar, composition, and spelling in this country. Add to that poor word processing skills, of which I am guilty too, and you have a recipe for language disaster. English is a lovely language and the beauty of the written word should be celebrated, not mutilated or interpreted by auto correct. Alas, it is what it is, and there's probably no turning back.

Superfluous apostrophes are the bane of my existence. Well, not really. Smiley Happy

Then there's the "to and too" problem. Or how about the use of "I" when it should be "me"? For example, "She went to the store with Jane and I" when it should be "She went to the store with Jane and me". After all, you wouldn't say "She went to the store with I", would you?

My dad's teaching of this stayed with me.

When reading the Declaration of Independence, I am truly moved by the beauty of the Enlish language. This art form has truly left us...
