The last time I checked, tickets for a seat towards the front of the stage cost in the hundreds of dollars. Why spend that amount of money to attend a performance only to make physical contact with the performer via a foreign object?
I'm an old lady who doesn't understand a lot of what passes as acceptable public behavior in the current society. The motivation for harming a stage performer after spending my hard-earned money for a ticket eludes me.
There is a scene in the movie "The Blues Brothers" where the band is playing onstage behind fencing material in order to be protected from flying objects being thrown at them by audience members. I believe this scene was meant to evoke a comedic tone. Is it time to install fences to deflect foreign objects being thrown by the audience?

Netting isn't new. Some of the old time performers that made their way up through the rough bars in their early careers will recount many a set performed behind netting material. And they were glad for it.

I haven't heard about things being thrown that could injure the performer, but throwing things on stage has been going on for 50 years. They should probably start printing on tickets that if you throw anything, you will be escorted out.

There seems to be a segment of the population that wants live performances discontinued. Keep it up and it will surely happen.

Bebe Rexha was hit in the face when an idiot guy threw a cell phone (he thought it would be "funny"). She ended up having stitches above her left eye, as well as bruising and swelling. (That moron has been arrested and charged.)
Others have been hit by projectiles in the face and exited the stage.
Kelsea Ballerini was hit in the face by some object and fell to the floor. Harry Styles was hit in the face, winced in pain and walked offstage. The list goes on and on.
Totally idiotic, self-centered behavior. People seem to have lost all sense of respect and decency, let alone common sense.

Another sympton of the "we do not respect other people" behavior that is accepted now. Do what makes you happy and don't worry.

ITA, it really makes no sense.
If I have the story straight, I seem to recall young women throwing panties at Tom Jones when he was on stage performing. Even that made no sense to me.
As for flying objects that can hurt a performer, the lack of common sense is disturbing.

It used to be you'd see roses, panties, bandannas and teddy bears tossed on stage, not aiming for the performers face. Now its cell phones and bottles lobbed at faces. apparently you get extra points the closer you get to their eyes.
Them that throws the projectile that hit it's mark should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

It's been going on for a long time.
Check out the film clip of "The Blues Brothers" "Rawhide" scene.
I agree it's bad behavior but some folks show up drunk, drugged or both at musical events. Some are just metalally ill.

i heard one concert goer who threw something at miranda lambert say he threw it because he thought it would be funny. another threw his cellphone thinking the musical artist would take a selfie and throw the phone back to him. some people need professional help
