Sounds like this was a service elevator used by
the staff members only...to move shipments, etc.
My Walmart is two floors and has an elevator and escalator and an escalator just for your cart. I think it might still be the largest Walmart in the world and might be the only one like it.
Our Walmart had an elevator and escalator too. It closed a few years ago but it did have an elevator.

I’m pretty sure this store is within a mall complex. OP uses this elevator all the time to avoid the uphill walk.

Stuck, well.........not actually stuck.
We were on the Queen Mary and took the elevator to go down a flight. The elevator was moving and shaking back and forth and up and down for a while. I knew it was an entity having a laugh. I told my husband to just hold on as the movement was violent. The door opened and it ran smooth as silk afterwards. The ship is known for it's haunted areas and entities.

Once years ago when I was working as volunteer at hospital. I was with another lady. And the elevator would not let us off. 20 minutes up and down, stopping at no floor, it was 1984 an it was an old elevator then. up and down no stopping. We were so sick. She took her shoe off, and like Khruschev she banged on doors ! we both yelled. Finally they got it to stop. Awful
then 3 years ago our elevator got stuck between second and first floor at a Marriott. I was with my husband thank goodness, not alone. It was 100 degrees outside, and about 85 in elevator because everything was off to elevator. We waited, waited for elevator crews to come in Los Angeles traffic. Then I got a little freaky. I started panicking cause of the small, warm elevator. Then I yelled at them to do something as my blood pressure was elevating with claustrophobia. Only then the manager said he would call fire dept! Hello! Why didn't they do that at first. Probably wouldnt be reported if elevator company fixed it opposed to Fire dept. we were in there. 45 minutes! Fire Dept. got us out in 10 minutes including travel to us. The manager comped us 2 days stay. As luck would have it we had got a special half price deal, lol. Usualy rooms were 115 dollars more a night.

I was stuck in an elevator here in Hawaii where I live. When I pressed the help button I was connected to a guy who asked for the address of the building I was in. I said address? Aren’t you in the same building as me? He said no he was in New Jersey! Again I was in Hawaii! Can’t repeat my answer....just started screaming for help. It finally came from a security guard in the building. My worst nightmare came true! At least I was in Hawaii right?🌺🌈
