Anyone know about jeeps..2002

Jeep Liberty limited edition 2002 changed battery and now the vehicle will not start.

Yes, the car is old but is in good condition and I really like it.

Just throwing the question out there hoping someone might have had this problem even if it was a long time ago.

Not towing it to the dealership mechanic. $$

If you charged the battery and it still doesn't start it may be the alternator. Your battery is meant to just start your vehicle, the alternator recharges the battery as you drive.

How old is your battery? Do you have interior lights or a door chime or is it completely dead after it was jumped?

Is it trying to start but doesn't? May be your starter.

It may be the alternator and/or ignition has gone bad.

You're not a member of AAA?  If not, I suggest that you join asap since your car is "old."  Towing is FREE!

Once your car starts nickeling & diming (sp)  you it's time for a new car.  The $$$ you put in repairs can be used for a nice down payment.

It is a new battery. All the lights work and so does everything else, it cranks,  it does not start. The new battery was purchased because the old battery was years old and did not hold the charge.

The car, with the old battery ran fine and got me home, but once I turned off the car, it would not start again, so I  replaced the battery. And now the car still will not start.

I have AAA and the car is in my driveway.

We have a 2001 Honda Accord that never gave us grief. . .until it did.

Same symptions as your Jeep. Hubby went online and read alot and figured it was th electronic "brain." He sent it in for service. Came back, car still would not start.

We have free towing so he towed it to a shop, it came back and althought the shop go it going to point where it was driveable, it is still giving us grief.

And this almost $1000 later.

I guess my point is that you should probably just bite the bullet and either:

1. Get to a mechanic

2. Give up and sell it as a "mechanic's special"

3. Donate it to your favorite charity

Re: Anyone know about jeeps..2002

In 2002 most vehicles were made with some types of computer chips, some of which control many simple functions of the vehicles.

Used to be as simple as this with internal combustion engines.

If it has spark and gas, it will start. Not so in todays world of the same types of internal combustion engines. Friend of mine is a mechanic (now called vehicle specialist) for a GM dealership. Every 6 months he has to go to 8 hours of classes/workshops, to keep his certificate valid for that dealership.

I could type a long list of what "might be's", but it is hard enough for me to analyze a vehicle when I am right next to it. I raced cars and worked on the "old fashioned(pre-computer chip)" internal 4 stroke combustion engines. A couple of those cars had neither a battery nor a starter. We used people power to get the spark, which then ignited the gas and then the "vroom, vroom" of a started racing built engine.

Be nice if I could give you a specific, but those days of me being able to analyze vehicle problems have been replaced with tools of the trade that tell the "vehicle specialist" where to look to find the source(not the symptom) of the vehicles failure to "vroom, vroom".

Re: Anyone know about jeeps..2002

It sounds like your alternator or your starter.

The battery will get you a few miles to get you home but if the alternator is bad it's not recharging the battery as you drive so dead battery on your next attempt.

A starter will usually give you a hint when its going bad. It will crank a few times, act hard to start but will 'catch' eventually and start.

Did they test either srarter or alternator or just sell you a new battery?

Maybe a connection from battery to engine came loose on your way.

DH uses a gadget you hook up & it gives you a code for the problem.

He bought the owners repair manuals for every vehicle we bought so he could work on them. Not so easy this day & age with all the electronics on board.

Re: Anyone know about jeeps..2002

@chiclets I have a 1997 Jeep Wrangler and I love it. Jeeps last forever. I just went through this when the battery connections were cleaned up and reconnected by my friend. It wouldn't start, it wouldn't even crank. It ended up being the alarm system.

It would be odd that it would suddenly be the starter, etc.

Not much help here but if you have an alarm system maybe check that out.

Good Luck!

If you have AAA, why not call them?.
