Currently live in Fairport, and work in the city. Rochester metro area is very live-able. Good roads, little traffic (sometimes there in an accident or contruction to slow things down), nice parks and the canal and Lake Ontario, good shopping, 4 seasons, relatively low house prices (but off set by higher property taxes), lots of restaurants, good theaters, colleges, tons of festivals. Downtown is turning itself around after years of decline. Love Rochester and would recommend.
All the suburbs are fine, some are more affluent than others. There is a funky east vs. west vibe (friendly competition) whereas some say one is better than the other -- I think that is all foolishnes. It is really how you define "better". However, I would not send my kids (if I had any) to Rochester City School district. The other districts are OK, as far as I know.
