If MI was going to fix this they would have already. 2 years with unsafe drinking water is unacceptable.  if this were your family ,you would welcome anyone that came to help.

This decision was made because the people were poor. I bet the mayor and govenor were not letting their familes use this water.

FYI - The mayor has no authority anymore in Flint.

The governor appointed a "Manager" who took control of the city - the mayor and council have no say in anything that happens there anymore. It's a ceremonial job now.

He did this in a number of cities (basically poor cities).

jesse jackson, michael moore and others, should just stay home and let MI and flint, fix this. jackson just wants camara time and isn't helping.

Isn't Michael Moore originally from Flint himself?

Yes, Michael Moore is from Flint and still has a home in N Michigan where I live and has every right to protest. The local media ignored the crisis as long as they could. If it wasn't for people like MM and RM this would never have had national recognition.

the people in flint vote for governors. why would you say they didn't vote for him?

i think lots of people(and apparently, the media) are to blame for this situation, not coming to a head, sooner than this.

The mayor would had to been voted in! As far as him appointing a manager, why was that done? The governor should be held re placed.

...they know very well where the current governor's votes came from - and where he isn't popular. He doesn't have much support in poor cities...in fact I bet if you looked at the stats - the final polling data would show that he did very poorly in Flint.

The governor of MI had the legislature create a law which allowed him to go to poor cities, and suspend the rights and duties of the mayor and council.

He replaced the mayors with his own appointed managers - who have the right to suspend unions, break contracts, declare bankruptcy and do basically whatever they please. Local government elected by the local citizens is kaput - suspended - no power.

One of his appointed managers came up with this great scheme to save money by changing the water supply.

They can do whatever they please, basically, including selling city assets. In Detroit the manager wanted to sell off the art museum's collection to private people...thankfully the media raised awareness and that idea was shot down.

Here is what they can do:

An emergency manager can:

  • Hire/fire local government employees
  • Renegotiate, terminate, modify labor contracts with state treasury approval
  • Sell, lease, or privatize local assets with state treasury approval
  • Revise contract obligations
  • Change local budgets without local legislative approval
  • Initiate municipal bankruptcy proceedings
  • Hire support staff

Has anyone heard of any solutions, in the works?

The estimate is up to 1 1/2 billion dollars to replace the water infrastructure. We can't even afford to fix the roads in Michigan so our governor creates this additional unnecessary problem for not only the citizens of Flint but the entire state.

The governor said the buck stops with him. Does he also take responsibility for the brain damage of the children and health problems the citizens will endure ? Will he and the state legislation do right by them ?
