All the pouting isn't going to change the fact that politics is a no-no here.

There are plenty of websites where one can discuss politics to their hearts content, or they can create a political site of their very own.

If anyone thinks that politics could be discussed "civilly" here, then they are extremely nieve.

This is a shopping website, and thete is ZERO need for a political forum here.

You want to discuss politics? Go to Vegas, there you can discuss politics all you want.

I seldom discuss politics with my husband and we are registered members of the same party.

Discussing anything here can be a nightmare.  I've yet to see a (forbidden) political thread here NOT turn nasty. No, I do not miss discussing politics.  I do wish we could discuss more current events.

We post here, so we're stuck with discussing minutiae.

I wish we could have productive political discussions but some folks just can't contain their extreme dislike for those who hold opinions they don't like.

There have been times I've seen those who argree with each other put someone else down for a differing view and have a discussion back and forth about how stupid that other person is, poking fun at the other person for holding that viewpoint.  They cross the border of disliking the views to blasting the person who holds that view.

I understand Q's desire to keep politics off here.

I've seen this too, and it is allowed to go on in areas other than politics.

It happens in health related topics (vaccines), it happens in 'science' related topics, and others. I guess my point is that it goes on, and is allowed to stand by the mods quite often, on topics other than politics, so I guess I don't see why, if they aren't going to stop it in those areas, the decide that politics are the place to draw the line.

Well, from that logic should follow that there is really no need here for movie forums, or for gaming forums, or a pet lovers forum, or a mom to mom forum.

The political forum gets banned because Q doesn't want to spend the time and money to monitor and control it. It gets just as ugly in the Wen forum or the fashion forum sometimes, but they sell things related to that, so they are willing to put up with the 'stuff' that it brings.

This is an archaic and outdated point of view.

Politics have always been important, and are more so now than ever.

I can see people wanting to come to a place that is free of that type of discussion, but to leave it totally out of  one's life entirely is socially irresponsible.

Debate and various view points are essential to the process, and yes, it does get rather ugly sometimes, but that is where one gets to really know the candidate, their supporters, the issues and what is really going on in the world.

Head in the sand syndrome is not beneficial to the nation or the individual.

----------------------------------

Just because one chooses not to have conversations about politics with others (especially in public with people they don't know) does not mean they have their head in the sand or don't know what's going on.

People read. They watch TV and listen to the radio. They make up their own minds what they believe and who they want to vote for.

To me, those who insist that public debate is "necessary" and that those who disagree are not sufficiently or properly informed, just mean if *they* could only browbeat you with *their* choice until you caved, the world would be a better place, all would be right in *their* political world, etc.

Just as there religious evangelists, there are political evangelists. I choose to avoid both. Not because I "don't want to know" and am hiding my head in the sand (from *their* POV), but because I'm an intelligent adult who reads, watches and listens to what is going on around me, and is capable of making my own decisions.

Those who insist that political discussions are necessary and MUST be had anywhere and everywhere are just protecting and promoting their own personal soap box. I'm not impressed.

Original post here (SeaMadien) dismisses the discussing of politics and makes it apparent that there is something wrong with doing so in any capacity. States that one is not in their right mind, and it can't be done in a civilized manner.

Those points are just not valid. Perhaps the conversations here often spiral into personal attacks, but that is not the nature of political or religious discussions among people of character and true interest in the topics. What usually happens is that whenever an opposite view is offered up, the lines are drawn, the names are called, the intimidation begins. And it is usually the same few who start it when the opposing view is introduced. There is a kind of gang that piles on, and the fun begins. And it certainly isn't reserved for politics.

Just because some people don't want to participate in a discussion of a particular nature, doesn't give them the right to demean or take that right away from others for doing so (not speaking of Q's right to not allow a topic on their forums, that is their right of course, but I'm talking about people here who think that because they don't want to, or are incapable of an intelligent discussion or debate on a topic, no one should find value or interest in it).

The best things we learn are from experience and from interactions with other people, including discussions and debates. Not everything can be learned from just reading and watching TV etc. Human interaction and the views and ideas of others, shared, debated, even heatedly and in less than perfect manner, are more valuable than some here want to give credit to.
