3/22 Morning Update

A Quick One!

Giraffe puzzle feeders return at 9:30 am for your viewing pleasure - lets see how long they last!

Keepers report April is very moody and off from her normal self -- this is a good thing. Back end continues to progress to our satisfaction.

We hope by the weekend or early next week the giraffes will return outside. Enrichment is used to stimulate the animals' body and mind! Enrichment for our giraffes is increased during longer indoor stays.

Giraffe Factoid:
Giraffes spots and patterns are like fingerprints! No two giraffes are the same!

What is good for the goose today will also be good for the gander tomorrow.

@Marp  Thanks again for the update with the interesting facts.

I guess April getting moody is a good sign.  Every night when I go to bed I am sure  I will miss the birth and find a "little" giraffe with April.

If it takes another two weeks, April will have a little April in April.

Re: Anybody watching April

[ Edited ]

I watched April when I went to bed late last night-

Yes!  Her belly has grown-Seems like its really dropped-I don't know if her calf was very active or she was just breathing but, she seemed very uncomfortable last night-

Her tail was up a great deal and at some point she pushed her body out, appeared as though she was pushing-

I waited for the longest time to  watch her settle in on the floor - but she didn't-

I know that the danger of neck injuries for the calf at birth can be a worry-I'm really hoping someone will be in the pen with her to help insure safety-

Edited to thank @Marp

The only time that I see her tail up, is when she poops! *lol*

I watch to see when her hind feet are splayed wide apart, in conjunction with her tail being up simultaneously.

LOL! She's playing with her new enrichment bucket now, pushing it around with her head, like she thinks it's a pinada and will rain treats down on her!

Too cute!

@Plaid Pants2 LOL

Nah, don't think she was pooping-she usually just stands naturally for that activity-

She had her body stretched out-

I did notice she seems to be taking weight off of her legs more frequently-lifting one or the other-all her pacing-

Mean while, Oliver's in his stall tucked in all comfy cozy!

Okay, is this a sad commentary on my life or what?  I'm addressing a post about a pregnant giraffe going poddy!!!!

Thanks for that Plaid Pants! Smiley Embarassed

Any guesses?  I'm going for week-end-if she can get outside and start moving more-

Gosh, Oliver sure is pacing and seems a little agitated while April's pen is being cleaned.....

ETA: Oliver has totally calmed down since the cage cleaner left. I wonder if he's feeling protective of her, since birth is eminent?

Ha!  Good point IG-maybe Oliver will be the one who actually gives the clues about April-

Yup, he's totally feeling protective-
