I totally get it @Suziepeach They are majestic and beautiful--I don't need to wait for the birth to cry-I already started! ![]()
They're like my sisters horses or my dogs, or anything so beautiful, I almost feel the need to look away!
I always feel so fortunate to witness such beauty-

@silentgirl, I completely agree. Told my husband when they turn the cam off lots of folks are going to be very unhappy. It's silly to say but they've become like ours.
I feel it's an honor to be able to watch, same as you ..

We just checked on April. She is still waiting and eating and waiting and eating, and walking and walking. ![]()
Someone just came in with a bucket of food. He then went over and checked her belly on both sides and she stood there very calm. Then he petted her at the neck area. Now she is again checking out the food. ![]()
Oliver is really pacing. ![]()

I totally agree @Suziepeach there is a natural "separation" thing that occurs when the cameras go away-I've known that feeling many times-
I'm hoping since they're raising funds we'll be able to watch a bit longer than usual once she gives birth-you know, a weaning away of sorts-![]()

@silentgirl, we can only hope they keep the cam up for a few days after the calf is born. I don't see them immediately taking it offline.. that would upset way too many viewers- us all included.

Greenville (SC) Zoo started a cam when they were expecting their first giraffe calf. It proved very popular and people kept following after the birth. It also increased zoo attendance because people wanted to see Autumn, Walter (her mate at that time) and Kiko. It is up to this day and very popular as people continue to watch Autumn, Tatu and new mate Miles.
If viewers continue to watch April, Oliver and the calf it is likely the cam will stay active. This little place is now world famous.

Do hope they keep the camera going! I've become attached and wouldn't mind taking the DGC there!

3/21 Evening Update
Keeper Report: April seems to be a bit more "off", dare we say agitated today (later day). April has had some serious back end swell and pulse today, witnessed by Jordan & Corey prior to enrichment install. Both giraffes enjoyed their newest enrichment toys until Oliver broke his and we went back to the drawing board. Improvements made and the will be re-introduced tomorrow around 9:30 am EST - be sure to tune in!
What the heck was the vet doing today and why was April put off?
Vet Report: "So if you were watching me in with her this evening (6:30ish) you would have seen a fairly cranky giraffe... you also would have seen me in there with a little white box looking thing. This is my doppler. Over the past few weeks I've been trying to desensitize her to seeing, hearing and being touched by it. It's easy to forget that she is a big and dangerous creature, you have to be real careful with how far you push them.
Odds & Ends:
April the Giraffe Apparel store will be back up next week! The store is working hard to send out more items than are in most stores in your local mall!
www.Aprilthegiraffe.com continues to have all official links and most current live feed link!
