@SeaMaiden Thank you for that detailed posting. It is so sad to read about all of the horrible things that have happened to that family, and this latest tragedy as well......

They did recover their bodies today. I pray the family can find peace and comfort during this time. No family I know has suffered so much loss and tragedy. God bless them all.

Getting into a canoe to fetch a ball?

Sorry--not a wise answer.

@lovesrecess What is your source for the boy's body being recovered? I'm not seeing that online, only Maeve's.

it is very sad but it might end for them if so many of them didn't make such bad decisions

I'm sorry, but how did Kathleen Kennedy make a bad decision? Or Patrick Bouvier? Or John? Or Robert? Or Kara?

@Sushismom JFK wouldn't let the Secret Service put up the buble top; JFK Jr. flew into instrument needed weather when he wasn't qualified; Teddy apparently drove while intoxicated. There is a long sad unfortunate list.

Ted Kennedy died because he had a malignant brain tumor.  His death had nothing at all to do with being intoxicated.  And one of his sons lost a leg at the age of 12 because he had bone cancer.  His daughter died from a heart attack. And this doesn't even scratch the surface of what this family has been through.

There are many sad stories within the Kennedy family that have nothing at all to do with "bad decisions".

100 hearts to you for your response.

In the spur of the moment, I can totally see, a Mom and Son, playing, having a blast, the ball goes in the water, one of them says, shall we grab the canoe and go get it?

They're laughing , having fun, a memory moment. They jump in the canoe, planning to grab the ball and go back.

Something, the wind, currents, whatever, catches them, and, in an instant, it all goes terribly wrong!  They didn't intend to go into the open bay, they didn't, in that moment of decision, even  think of danger.

Who hasn't, now and then, made a poor decision, a poor judgement call.  It's called living and making our mistakes.
The vast majority of the time, we don't pay with our lives, tragically sometimes we do.

So very sad!

I completely agree.

Many people do wild, risky things every day and live to tell the tale.  What this mother and son did sounds very ordinary to me, something that many of us would have done.  They had probably been in that canoe together 100 times.  There was no way to know that things would go horribly wrong.

My heart goes out to the family.  I see no need for blame, even here where none of them will ever see it.  Compassion for the loss of these two lives seems to me to be the far better option.

@NYC Susan I was not speaking about Ted Kennedy's death but an earlier and unfornutate DUI incident.  Nonetheless a bad decision.

Ted's bad judgment certainly brought tragedy to the Kopechne family. 😥

Most of the tragedies in the Kennedy family had nothing to do with bad decisions. And many, many of the Kennedys have made some very good decisions, including Eunice Kennedy Shriver who started the Special Olympics, RFK, Jr., who founded the Waterkeeper Alliance, etc.  Far too many to list!   Not to mention the many members of the Kennedy family who have served in public office, those who have served in the military, etc.  Every generation of the Kennedy family is filled with bright lights who do a lot of good in this world and have made some wonderful decisions that benefit a lot of people.

Being glib about "bad decisions" does a disservice to this family.  (And to even imply that JFK being shot in the head was in any way his own fault is appalling.)
