Re: Annoying comments people say when you're retired

"Now you have time to work at the Thrift Store" (Humane Society shop)  I tell them I dont want another job  to be scheduled to be someplace at a certain time on a certain day every week.  Then having to find someone to fill in for me when I can't. I worked for 50 years. I will gladly volunteer for fundraisers when I choose to do so.

I have an 88 year old friend that loves it and said it isn't a job to her. It keeps her active and alert and she is  very good at the cash register as did that for  many years. Everyone is different.

What do I do all day?

a. Anything I want.

b. Enjoy the fact that I don't have to go to work anymore unless I choose to.

Re: Annoying comments people say when you're retired

I get comments about getting a part-time job. I worked for over 50 years, most of them working 60 or so hours a week so, no, I'm not interested in working any longer.  I just say I do whatever I feel like doing. I'm sure they don't feel that they are being rude but I think they are. My real friends know what I do all day, casual acquaintances don't have the right to ask such. People who think you have to be working until you drop just don't understand that there's so much more.

I don't find such comments insulting at all.  I'm grateful to be retired, and it would never occur to me to choose to be offended by well-meaning folks who aren't as fortunate as I am.

Re: Annoying comments people say when you're retired

When people ask what I do all day, I just tell them, "anything I want.  Everyday is Saturday."  That usually shuts them up. Retirement is the best job I ever had.  There was only one day when I was alone, husband hadn't retired yet, and I said, "what in the world am I going to do."  Those feelings lasted half a day and I couldn't wait till tomorrow.  Never regretted retirement one bit!!!

Re: Annoying comments people say when you're retired

I'm retiring before the end of the year and more than questions about what I'm going to do with my time, I get seemingly concerned comments (mostly from my kids) that I'm somehow going to shrivel up and blow away if I don't keep busy. LOL I  have to tell them about all the projects I'm planning to do and that I plan to start working out regularly, etc. What I actually end up doing remains to be seen but this seems to satisfy them for the time being.  🙂

Maybe she was envious and couldn't be happy for you. If so, it doesn't sound like she was much of a friend.

Because of my husbands health issues, the  retirement decision was pretty much made for me.  I knew I was walking away from my job to be a caretaker, but was grateful to be able to get away from the biggest headache in my life.

Even under the special circumstances, I had quite a few friends make comments along the lines of "you won't know what to do with yourself", "you'll get bored and wish you were back with us", and my answer was always NEVER!"

I am 9 years in, and not once have I ever said I was bored, nor wished I was back in my office dealing with the stress and madness of all that has happened there since I left.   I was made to be retired!  I just focus on breathing and follow the path I'm supposed to be on.

You sound productive and grateful, @RedTop -- with a good heart and a good head on your shoulders!
