Ancestry vs 23andMe

[ Edited ]

I'm thinking of giving one of these as Christmas gifts.  For those of you who have used one or both, how do you rate them?  Is one giving better information than the other?  Any opinions appreciated.

Thanks for asking this question.  I've finally gotten over the compulsion to not make my private life public regarding this process.  My husband is purchasing as a gift and ask me who he should use.  I was surprised by his suggestion, but think it might be fun to explore the past!  I'm looking forward to the posts.

Just remember sometimes people from the past you have no idea who they are can surface.

It's like opening a whole can of worms.

Not a great idea to do any DNA testing because these type of tests will advise  everyone including you what medical  conditions you may have in your DNA, which you never knew about as they have not surfaced as of yet.

Also you are at risk of not being able to continue to renew your medical insurance if they also learn of your DNA at risk findings.

You may become uninsurance and that is frightening!

Also it is said on the Internet that all medical DNA information is sold by many of the same companies who do offer these DNA tests, so weigh the pro's and con's extremely well before putting your medical DNA out there, which may be just ripe for the picking.

Be sure the person you are gifting these to wants to use them.  I sure wouldn't!

@GiantsLover This is why I've never considered it before.  Do you think these concerns are documented as valid or hearsay?

Also my Physicians are against taking these tests, and I can certainly understand why, unless it is a life or death situation.

DH and I did 23 and me.  We opted not to include the health part.  We got alot of surprises.  It was fun.  Also found I'm related to Otzi the Iceman...how cool is that? Also that I'm a little Jewish, that made me happy!  I recommend it.

I really can't give you an opinion.  My husband used Ancestry.  It didn't tell him much more then he already was aware of.

I just ordered 23 and me Health and Ancestry.  I am not really that interested in genealogy, but I have reasons to be more knowledeable in my family's genetic DNA.  Hopefully, I will be able to get information which may lead me to decide whether I need to get further genetic testing.  (Which is quite costly and usually not covered by insurance.)

@Allegheny...I do know that Ancestory has the opportunity to plug in your results to the genetic testing lab Prometheus and you can get back a printout of your genes and how they affect your profile for illnesses. I had the gene for Type 1 diabetes which I did get in my teens. Other information definitely matched up. Just a thought....
