I thought about it, I might do just for the fun of it.  But from a practical standpoint it's useless information.  Knowing that I have 3% of this and 15% of that in my gene pool doesn't tell me anything about myself.

I understand what you're saying.  Of course it really doesn't tell you anything about yourself.  For me, I need this information for a very specific, advantageous to me, purpose.

Thank You for that info, Nutmeg.  You are always so helpful.  I don't have a doctor so that's why I have been trying to find a route whereby I can submit a blood sample and receive a set of results on my own.  Smiley Happy

Moonchilde - Thank You also for your response.  That is a lot of great information.   I have to admit that I can get overwhelmed easily sometimes, at this point, and I keep getting in my own way trying to do research.   This helps immensely.  Thanks so much, again!!  Smiley Happy

I guess the science of this isn't as advanced as I had expected (hoped?).  I figured that it was to the point that you could submit the blood and get - you are 25% German, 25% this, 10% that, etc.   Smiley Sad

No, not that advanced. Ethnicity is a relatively recent concept.  Think of all the countries that didn't exist, and the borders that have moved, over the last 150 years.  It wouldn't be accurate for example to say one's ancestry was German if relatives came from an area that used to be Poland but later became Germany. And before WWI Europe was a very different place, map-wise. Then think of "Yugoslavia" and how many separate countries it is now. Same with Russia.

The testing is done with either saliva or cheek swabs.

There are companies who specialize in testing for Native American DNA.  It's more expensive. Can be googled but the Big Three don't offer it routinely, you have to dig a bit.

Re: Ancestry DNA testing

[ Edited ]

I did my Ancestry DNA and was actually surprised by the results. Instead of 50% Armenian, I was only 20 something percent. My Norwegian side was only 2%!

I knew I was Polish, but also French British and Italian! I thought I was Armenian, Polish and Norwegian in that order. Very interesting!

Ancestry had promotional pricing from tome to time. I paid $99 which was not on sale. I also loaded my dna to gedmatch.com which is free and they have a lot more options. Ancestry didn't have my Native American percentages, bur Gedmatch did.

It's all based on statistical algorithms and probability, so it's good to see different results. Evidently, for ancestry they need to collect a large sampling of dna from the base population for comparison and they cannot get that from the north anerican tribes who view it as an invasion of privacy.

That's distressing.  Does the place you used take DNA or just try to track your lineage otherwise?

If it's that far off (I don't know which one), it doesn't seem right that they take your money and then give you some random results.  Smiley Sad

Thanks for that info, Golden!

My husband was trying to do this for me, as he knows some people who are LDS, but it was not a thing where you submit DNA - they just take whatever information you can offer and try to trace it.   They didn't come up with much,

I'm hoping to try a place that takes your DNA and I'd like to think that they would have the correct info.  *sigh*    Guess I was expecting too much.

Thanks again!  Smiley Happy
