The OP raises some valid points. Some are so defensive, why?

Re: Americans are just spoiled!

I think size of the family back then had everything to do with "making do with less." Growing up in the 70s & 80s, I didn't know anyone with 7-12 siblings. Most families I knew had 1 - 3 kids. Each kid usually had his/her own bedroom. That's what my 'normal' was growing up, so that's what I expected when house hunting. We weren't about to look for a 2 bedroom house, just because that was pretty much all we needed.

OP,

One sentence of your thread said "Many think they are entitled to it." They do. This country has become an entitlement society. And I"m not saying any more.

My neighbors have a house that is twice the size of my home. They have worked hard during their working years and are 'entitled' to spend their money on this larger home.

Re: Americans are just spoiled!

The houses in my neighborhood are small. I deal with it, because it's paid for.

I'm with you. When we were looking to move recently, top of my "must have" list was "at least two bathrooms". Having to share, even when there are just two of us, is inconvenient. I know my grandma had just an outside toilet for a family of four, and I appreciate what I have today, but life is different now.

I would rather do without a car than a second bathroom. I don't need a TV. I do love my internet, and my own bathroom.

I'm not defensive, but one person should not be passing judgement on what someone might spend for housing, unless they are footing the bill. I also don't know who anyone could assume that some are not aware of how others live in other parts of the world.

I'm not defensive. I was just trying to point out that in my area people have been trying to survive the last five years not buy bigger and better.

I wouldn't make a judgment on American society as a whole based on one tv show that is not a research documentary, but produced for ENTERTAINMENT.

Re: Americans are just spoiled!

I will sort of agree with the OP. The younger generation seems to have a sense of entitlement about them, and don't think they should have to start out at "the bottom". Even if they don't have the income to support that type of lifestyle they still seem to think they deserve it. I think a lot of people just don't know how to "start out" anymore. Part of that comes from parents giving their kids everything and the kids never having to work for it.

No, I'm not jealous. I'm happy with what I have and I worked to get it.
