You cant be serious?  He joined ISIS which avows to kills us.  Free speech isnt an issue here.  Being a traitor is the issue.  He was loaded with a lot of money in multiple currencies and three cell phones.  There is a reason he was able to surrender.  ISIS does not let people surrender, particularly foreigners.  I dont buy his story, and i am sure that our security agency will evaluate him thoroughly. He was sent back to do something I think.  Innocent 26 year old?  I dont think so.

@chrystaltree  It's not just "free speech." He's espousing a cause that hates the U.S. and wants to destroy it. Is that OK with you?

@Zita - tho I feel it is treason, he will be tried under the Patriot Act of 2001 and may be fined and/or imprisoned no longer than 15 years.  But he may not be tried for a while as some feel the Act is too broad.  The three men from Minn. have not been tried as yet.  If people were killed as a result of his involvement, the penalty would be more severe.  It's not a matter of "free speech" as you state but aiding enemy combatants by supplying personnel, which includes oneself.

@Plaid Pants2- it's not a matter of free speech.  I don't know what this kid's feelings are.  He left because he prayed all day and couldn't smoke.  I didn't hear any anti American rhetoric but he will be charged under the Patriot Act and fined or imprisoned for acting not speaking

He did more than "speak"; he joined.

Correct, he joined the enemy to us all ,in our nation. They kill so many , and he planned on doing the same.

@goldensrbest- Correct, he aided enemy combatants but he did not kill and we don't know if that was his intention even tho ISIS does.  After seeing his interview, I am not sure if this young man is mentally competent.

I do not believe a 26 year old doesn't know that it's a bad decision to join Isis.

I mean, come on...

@faeriemoon- I think most "normal" 26 year olds would.  I am not sure he is "normal" and I will reserve judgement.

@Zita what provision of the Patriot Act are you referring to?  This guy actually joined ISIS which is quite different from the Minnesota group that were caught in the US trying to join. The Patriot Act primarily addresses domestic occurences and preventions etc.

@Shawnie- 2339a/b  Section 18.  Was written re "providing materials" including personnel to enemies including those defined as terrorist organizations which explicitly says oneself is considered personnel.  This is how the 3 from Minn will be tried but not for a while.  They did not join and all specifics are not released but they may have communicated with ISIS, web activity etc. also covered in the act.  As stated, many feel the act and definitions are too vague.    The second issue with this young kid, is psychological studies and if he has any issues that may exclude him from prosecution.

@Stray, do you know if there is a history of psych problems historically for this young man? Maybe he's just trying to act like an incompetent?

@MaggieMack- no I really don't know anything about him but his affect was off and his answers were inappropriate.  He could be acting....but I did hear they were going to test him.  I think he is in Turkey?
