How do you type here? Do you use speech translate-to-text maybe?
I would imagine having to grab hold of a gear shift handle and simultaneously squeezing a button or leveraging it to move it into park, reverse, and drive would be much harder than turning what amounts to be a large radio knob or pushing down a button with your finger. These are easier than typing which usually done in order to post here.
@monicakm cool!

I drive a 6-speed manual shift...(and have for over 50 years)

I hope that anyone with that type of shifter and brings their dog along has a very well trained, calm dog.
@LizzieInSRQ, I can't speak for how @SilleeMee handles a traditional shifting lever but for me I primarily use the palm of my hand. My car does not have a button that needs to be pushed simultaneously.

Oh Lord !! I hope my car holds up for many years to come
because this is all new to me ! I didn't know anything about
"piano keys" until I read your post ! I bought my 2013 Equinox LT brand new and it only has 96,000 miles on it and it runs quiet and like new
Best of luck on your search and I hope you find the right car for you

When I first learned to drive, I drove an old blue Dodge that belonged to my mom. It had push buttons.

I think Chrysler had those push buttons for a while years ago.
Yes, they did @geezerette. Here is an old Plymouth, which was made by Chyrsler, with push button transmission. Interesting to bring this back.
WAY WAY BACK in the 1950. They were a disaster then as I predict they will be now. Who has time to look over at buttons? You have to take your eye off the road. Stupid idea.

I have had a couple temporary "automatic drive" cars...vacation rentals, and loaners, in my lifetime.
I just put the thing in "drive" and that works. (Of course, I don't know WHAT TO DO with my left foot and right arm.)
WHY do you have to shift an automatic is my question.
‎03-11-2025 08:01 PM
I would imagine you'd get used to it, but it would bother me if I had to actually look at the keys to shift. I have the same issue with touch screens in cars now. Annoying!
@Desertdi LOL-- I know what you mean! We have a 6-speed Dodge one ton, and I've had Toyota pickups, a Subaru Legacy and my WRX that were all manual trannies. Our 2016 Forester we have now is the first automatic I've ever owned and sometimes I still catch myself going for the clutch. ![]()

I got a 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe last Fall and it has the shifter on the steering column. Turn it forward for drive, turn towards driver for reverse and half turn either direction for neutral and push a button on the side to put it into park. Took me forever to get used to it after having driven a Chevy Silverado for many years but not so bad now.

Thanks @PJinIA. Ooh and look at your arrow layered in the photo
Is that flat beige area to the right bottom a wireless phone charger? I'm not in love with the outward appearance of the car I'm interested in but love everything else about it. Same with my Ford Flex when we bought it 14 years ago. I fell in love with the interior first and that made me love the exterior.
