Going out for a casual dinner with friends. It is very hot & humid so I decided to wear a tank style maxi dress because it would be cool, and my crochet shrug. So - 3 people have commented on how I am so dressed up. - Why did I get so dressed up? etc. Since when is a t shirt jersey tank dress dressed up? What is wrong with our society when putting on a simple, plain dress and casual sweater is all dressed up.Jewelry - garnet stud earrings - silver mermaid pendant and a silver with enamel seashell bracelet I bought at cracker barrell.

What's wrong with our society?  That could take hours or days to answer but I don't think it has anything to do with what those three people said.

What is considered 'dressed down' in your area?  Here in Wisconsin, I would consider the outfit you described as appropriate attire for a Friday fish fry.  Enjoy!

I totally understand what you’re saying. A couple of weeks ago we went out with a few couples and they said “whoa you didn’t have to dress up for us”. I was wearing a short sleeve striped maxi dress and sandals. Nothing special. I don’t get these comments either.

But heck I was comfortable and I felt good. I will wear what I want.

For me that would be dressed up, especially considering I don’t wear dresses of any kind. LOL.

Re: All dressed up????

How were the others dressed?  I’m guessing a tee and capris, in which case you are dressed up but who cares?

first let me say, i always have a dress on.  long, with a shawl, duster, or wrap of some kind, and am accessorized.

I think that for some people if you are not wearing pants, or shorts, you must be dressed up.  Is it unusual for you to wear a casual dress?

Just take it as a compliment, that you looked nice.  Maybe it was more not that you were overdressed, but they made no effort.

I get comments on my attire almost daily from strangers.

usually in the form of a compliment.

Your outfit sounds pretty.  I think wearing a dress, even a casual one, can seem dressier.

dressed up to some may be dressed down to others may be a regular outfit to still others......it really depends on the individual and it doesnt sound like they were criticizing you.

just say "thanks, i love dressing this way."

Just take it as a compliment and not read societal ills into it.  This is the least of society’s problems.
