Oh.. that IS funny! Well, NOT really, but you know what I mean.

Getting dressed up as you say, these days, to most people it seems is anything besides their jeans, leggings or shorts,

Everywhere has become soooo casual it is almost ridiculous sometimes what people do wear out in public.

Casual is fine, but, there are times one may want to look real nice for themselves and for others and people look at you like your the crazy one! On the whole people have become way too casual or rumpled or bare - I believe mirrors are just for home decor and not really used for what they are intended for other than applying makeup or fixing your hair.

Dress up for yourself, no one else’s opinion really matters anyhow...

I totally understand what you’re saying. A couple of weeks ago we went out with a few couples and they said “whoa you didn’t have to dress up for us”. I was wearing a short sleeve striped maxi dress and sandals. Nothing special. I don’t get these comments either.

But heck I was comfortable and I felt good. I will wear what I want.

You got it - the whole point was to be comfortable and I felt a dress was more comfortable than capris would be in this heat.Isn't the whole point of wearing a maxi dress to be comfortable?

@Tinkrbl44 The folks who were commenting weren't going to dinner with us - they were just a group of neighbors who were outside visiting with my DH when I walked out to tell him I was ready to go.

We went to Carrabas's Italian Grill which is a nice restaurant and certainly a maxi dress is appropriate dress for there.

The Chicken Parmesan at Carrabba's is my favorite entree on the menu.  I've noticed diners attired in everything from jeans to suits when we've enjoyed a meal there.

Your outfit sounds lovely; I don’t own a dress, so I see you as dressed up.

I hope that society can survive despite your neighbors' comments.

Your outfit sounds great. And not overdone at all. Why so offended?

Sounds like you looked very nice.  Though I couldn't wear a maxi dress (I'm way too short), most look very nice and appropriate to dine out.  Sadly today some people will go out to dinner in clothing that looks more appropriate for gardening.

Your dinner companions were likely complimenting you.  You looked lovely but were quite comfy.  Don't read anything else into it.  Besides, if they were being judgemental, shame on them!

OP seems rather upset by this, I don't see it as a big deal at all. Because so many ladies now wear capris, jeans, leggings, and yoga pants due to the athleisure trend-- when they see someone wearing a dress or skirt they consider it dressed up. No big deal, wear what you are comfortable with.

I guess I'm in the camp that thinks a dress is dressy (or dressier than pants). If I'm going somewhere and what to be a little dressed up, I'll wear a dress.  Even if it's a casual one.
