Someone in our NextDoor community said her teenaged daughter and her friend (both healthy) would go shopping and run errands for seniors or those with compromised immune systems. This then spurred many others to volunteer to help, providing a much-needed service to seniors.
These girls were being altruistic, however, this could also provide opportunities for young people who need to perform service hours to obtain some of the hours they need to fulfill their requirements. When our son was young, he needed to perform a certain number of service hours for Confirmation and high school graduation. This was a diocesan requirement, so there were thousands of students needing service hours. I don't think the requirements have changed since then. At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter if someone's an altruist or fulfilling a requirement, as long as they help you in your time of need.

Our food bank is offering drive up service. No need to get out of your car, just came withan empty trunk and they will fill it with groceries. I plan on volunteering for the food bank next week.

With so many schools closed, young children are at home with online home study assignments to complete. This is a perfect job opportunity for serious-minded, academically-oriented teens in their spare time.
Young children probably can relate better to another young-but- older person acting as a "teacher", than they would to their parents trying to tell them what to do with assignments and being the tutors.
A teenager has been hired to come in a few days a week to help our elementary-school granddaughter complete her school assignments--so Mom & Dad can get their own jobs done while they have to work more from home, too.
I posted elsewhere earlier that my DIL says she might now be able to add "home schooler" to her resume, because she and my son will have to monitor and guide the home schoolwork, too.
Looks like education in the U.S. is going to venture into a whole new territory when it comes how we educate our children!!

Also in a community that has others helping.
Regarding heeding the warnings - yesterday a news reporter walked through Georgetown which is normally overtaken by those celebrating St. Patricks Day. Many bars and restaurants closed and ones that stayed open said they would be practicing social distancing. Surprise of all surprises - the public took the advice seriously and NOBODY SHOWED UP. Reporter walked down the street and it was empty. I've lived here for over 40 years and don't remember having ever seen that.

Our food bank is doing that also but it is because most of their volunteers are seniors and they do not want them exposed to the virus.
