Re: Advantage of Apartment Living

@kaydee50

I understand about bulding equity.  I've owned/sold two houses.

It's just not worth it for me.  The expense and amount of time spent on upkeep just doesn't appeal to me.  Been there, done that.

No - I'm not in a rent-controlled apartment.

@ALRATIBA I understand what you're saying but paying rent for decades without anything really to show for it does not appeal to us. (Maybe you're in a rent controlled apartment??)   Our condo management is very responsive to problems although not, of course, replacing a broken appliance.   For us it's the best of both worlds--home ownership and not much home ownership responsibility.

BTW, we're heading to NYC next week with the intention of buying an apartment there.

Living in one of the world's biggest cities, @ALRATIBA has the ideal living situation. I'm just guessing, but after 26 years in the same place, you've probably formed a circle of acquaintances which isn't that different from small town life.

@hckynut

Sounds as though you have the best of both worlds.  I'm happy for you, Cindy & kitty kids.

My Mom went to work as a teacher aid as soon as all 4 of us kids were in school full time since her hours were the same as ours.  She also didn't want any government assistance.  My father was in the picture but had issues.  All us kids ended up owning our homes.

Hope you all have a great rest of your summer & wishing you best of health.

@ALRATIBA

Sounds as if you have a great management company.  And the important thing is that you are living as you want to live. There's no one right answer.

Our suburban house is fully paid for, and I intend to stay right where I am.  I would be miserable living in an apartment for many reasons.  The important thing is to recognize what works for you.

Last night I entered a service order online that my freezer compartment in the fridge wasn't freezing.

Today - tech came to look at the fridge - determine it needed to be replaced.

New fridge will be here later today.

@ALRATIBAdo you mean RENTING AN APARTMENT or owning an Apartment like a Condo or Co-op.  Big Difference.

I don't consider a speedy replacement of a major appliance an "up" for living in an apartment.  But that's just me.  Landlords are typically responsible for some of these things and sometimes they are not.

Some people rent and have to bring in or buy their own stoves or referigerators.  Yep.

Good luck with your new appliance though.

That did work out wonderfully for you. But it definitely depends on the building's management. I had a family member's major appliances go out. They considered themself lucky there had been an empty apartment where the appliance could be removed and used as a replacement. Otherwise they were looking a several months for a replacement.

yes, it depends on a lot of things.  Timing is one too.

Parkchester also has folk who own their condo and rent them out @ALRATIBA .  That looks like Parkchester to me (The Bronx) or Co Op City)  I was born in NYC but moved to PA about 10 years ago.

I feel that way now too.  Besides, you can't pick and choose your neighbors no matter what anyway @kaydee50 .  I know no one is above me making noise, no one is next door to me on either side making noise.  I prefer that.

Re: Advantage of Apartment Living

We considered downsizing to apartment living.  Looked at several places.  Looked again at our current home.  Decided to stay where we are by rearranging things to live on one floor.
