Re: Advantage of Apartment Living

If one finds a good landlord or management company, renting really does alleviate a lot of stress about things like this.

Glad you were well taken care of, and life is back to normal!

Well .... it's done!

The guys showed up with the new fridge about five minutes after I finshed emptying the old one.

(I had stuff piled all over the kitchen and dining room table.  Amazing how much stuff fits in a fridge!)

Removed old fridge - gave me time to sweep up "26 years of accumulated dust" and a quick once-over with the swifter wet jet.

Installed the new one - I reloaded and now I'm going to collapse.

Brand new fridge - less than 24 hours after I put in a maintenance request!

Enjoy ur new refrigerator. When I got my new Whirlpool refrigerator 2 years ago, I was sooooo excited. I said to a friend, "when u get old, a new refrigerator and new shoes excite me." Loving this Whirlpool refrigerator - no bells and whistles - but lots more room than the previous Whirlpool of the same size.

Before I bought my condo I lived in a few apartments....and it doesnt matter how expensive or how new it is.....It's all up to what kind of Management is in charge and the ownership.....  My advice, is to read the reviews, and also do a driveby and see how they keep the outside of the complex is kept which is a clue....a bad sign is when the complex changes their name to try to hide bad reviews....thankfully previous tenants will key you in on that aspect as they disclose that under the new name and advice people to read in reviews under the previous name

I've lived in complexes that were reasonably priced and the Manager screened the prospective tenants well----the apartment complexes were quiet, well maintained and work orders completed the same day.....Right now my sister lives in a luxury brand new apartment and pays top dollar---but they are noisy, tenants playing video games at all hours, one guy weight lifts and slams the weights down at 3am, and there's a full gym, but the neighbor never uses it, the couple across from her fight constantly, late night pool parties, the storage units have been broken into several times, the security gates are always out of order, work orders take a while, and the Manager and no one in the office really cares....SMH And this is supposed to be LUXURY!! I told her Id move if I was her....but she likes the apartment lay out, lots of storage and she likes the location....

As far as home ownership, its nice to own, its an investment and you build up equity, but you are on your own when it comes to repairs. Also, if you have bad neighbors you are kinda stuck unless you want to go through the hassle of selling in order to move--difficult to deal with....a friend just purchased a home---air conditioner goes out, hot water heater, and she has a plumbing problems all within the first year of ownership...oh what "fun"....Yep, there are pros and cons to renting and owning....

That is great service and all that matters is that you're happy where you live!

You lead a very busy and fulfilling lifestyle and are in the perfect spot for that---one can tell you are enjoying it!

That is what I call great service! I don't get appliances replaced, but still benefit from certain niceties living in a condo. In just the last few months, our windows have been washed, batteries replaced in smoke detectors, furnace filters replaced, dryer vent cleaned and just yesterday our balcony railing was painted.

Yet still, I keep thinking about the luxury of apartment living where I could  be unencumbered from home ownership and have a total sense of freedom.

Most of the time, when buying a house, the seller (or seller's realtor) will give the buyer a Home Protection Plan aka Warranty Coverage for the first year. If she got the warranty, she'd be protected. I bought a corner house - only one house next to me - and one house behind mine. I've been here for 20 years and put very little money into my house (I bought it brand new) and I have the best neighbors. Before renting an apartment or buying a house --- knock on people's doors who live there - and ask lots of questions. It's also a good idea to drive around late at night to be sure crazies aren't hanging around or racing their cars.

Sometimes people will not tell you if there is a high crime rate in the apartment building that you are thinking of renting.  When I rented an apartment I asked the apartment manager about the crime rate in the building and all she said was to check with the local police department.  I did not check and decided to rent an apartment anyway.  Less than a year later my car was broken into and when I asked a neighbor about it she said that cars get broken into on a regular basis in that building.  If I ever decide to rent another apartment I will definately check with the police department regarding the crime in the area.

Home warranty companies are rip offs. We had AHS when we first bought one and it was a disaster. If you want to purchase one, be sure and read all the fine print. They will not pay for any upgrades when replacing an appliance....and tons of other things are not covered. Any repairs will still cost you a lot of money.

Re: Advantage of Apartment Living

I would love to move far away from the 'burbs where we are now. Due to medical issues I cannot bee more than half an hour from  It has spread out and grown so much that we now have bobcats, coyotes, and other critters wandering around our neighborhood since their habitat north of here has been taken away from them. They are looking for food. I lived in an apartment years ago and had no other option at the time. I hated sharing a ceiling with the cop who lived above me. He lifted weights every night and I just knew those barbells were going to crash through my bedroom ceiling and crush me in my sleep.
