Re: Advantage of Apartment Living

I get it, love apartment living.  Not only are all repairs taken care of, maintenance is also included.  Cutting grass, shoveling snow, raking leaves  are not my thing.  I rather spend my time doing things I enjoy.  Do not have to worry about appliances breaking down, roof leaking, pipes breaking (have all 3 happen, repairs made promptly at no additional costs).  Because my costs are known, no suprises, I can invest for my retirement in something other than a house.

I'd say you got seriously lucky!!!!

I hated apartment living so now we have a house.  I don't like that either since there are many cons.

There's no making some people happy.  LOL!!!!

I recently sold my home and moved to a retirement apartment.  At this point in my life it was the right decision.  There is a sense of peace and relief about not having to worry about the maintenance and upkeep of a home.  There are additional benefits living in a retirement community – everything is provided.  They clean the apartments, provide meals, activities, etc.

We’ve been having heavy rain/thunderstorms.  If I was still in my home I would have been running up and down 3 flights of stairs all through the night checking the basement for flooding.  I no longer have those worries.  I can just enjoy life.

I know it isn’t for everyone.  There are pros and cons to everything.  The importance of certain things will be different for everyone.

@gertrudecloset

No … it’s Manhattan. East side. See the skyline to the west?

Re: Advantage of Apartment Living

When I was younger I always used to say that I would stay here if anything happened and my husband went first.

Now I say I'd sell the house and would go into into a newer upscale 2 bedroom apartment.

I wouldn't do an assisted living type of arrangement, I'm not a joiner and have no desire to want to be one.  I like my own company and don't need to be around people.

I would also want my own kitchen.  I think it would get tired real fast not having a "home cooked" meal after a week or two.

Re: Advantage of Apartment Living

@ALRATIBA Glad all worked out for you!  Sounds like you are where you should be! Smiley Happy

I love living in a somewhat rural area.  We live on 10 acres and most of the year there's only 1 neighbor house visible on our left. In the wintertime when the trees lose their leaves we can see some of the homes on the hill to our right side but once Spring comes and the trees' leaves come back they disappear.  There's a 2 lane road at the bottom of our acreage but we're set up away from that.

If I had my way, we'd move farther out into the country but dh wouldn't be happy so where we are now is good for both of us. Will say that I love visiting NYC! So much to see and do!

I wouldn't mind living in an apartment if landlords/owners weren't so greedy by raising the rent every year.  I bought a condominium basically for rent control.  Yes, the association fees and the property taxes have increased throughout the years but not at the high levels of rent being raised in apartments.  I also have never heard of management replacing/fixing a refrigerator.  When I have rented an apartment the refrigerator was the renter's responsibility.

@wagirl

It's really rather civilized around here.  We have a good mix of retired folks, families of all ages, and grad school students.  Population is around 20,000.  I've been here 26 years .. and have friends who have lived here even longer

These are post WWII buildings - very well built - just about noise proof.  Generally the only noise I hear is when they are vacuuming the carpets in the hallway.

No smoking allowed near buildings.  These days - I don't even know anyone who still smokes!

@CrazyDaisy

So true - I banked the proceeds of the sale, moved into an apartment and kept beefing up my 401K until I retired.

Makes for a comfortable retirement.
