@shoekitty. I don't know about wheelchairs but Medicare will not pay for scooters.  That's why the largest seller, The Scooter Store went out of business.

@Kachina624    They do here in California, my Dr at first sent a RX into LIFEWAY MOBILITY here.  I had

one just about ordered, when after trying one and having the agent anylize me they decided not for me. Scooters aren't alsways recommended anymore I found out, due to accidents.  But they are covered here. Depending on type.  The scooter Store and many others went out of business due to massive Medicare fraud. Most all of them we saw on TV were found quilty.  Not everyone will qualify.  You need to meet criteria, and be seen by Dr and then the company selling the equipment

@shoekitty.  My friend used a small scooter to get around her home.  One day, when reaching for something, she slipped off of and overturned it and couldn't get up.  I rushed over to her house but I couldn't get her up.  I called 911 and asked for EMTs, no sirens please.  Two wonderful paramedics had her back on her scooter in a snap.

My mom died 25 years ago so I'm sure things have changed.  She also could have used some insurance, she was a retired state employee.  Also had arthritis since she was 5 from rheumatic fever.  Had knees and hips replaced. 

She was a trooper she walked about a half a mile to the bus stop every morning and afternoon because she worked downtown and parking was expensive.  A neighbor usually scooped her up in the morning and my dad would get her in the afternoon.  I never thought much about it as a kid but man....  Me and my sister did cook dinner from a young age to help out.

@Kachina624   OMG, THATS SO TRUE!  The mobility place told me so many accidents.  Scooters are for people with certain disabilities only, at least Medi care approved.  what you decribed is a common occupancy he  said. The problem is the turning.  I hope your friend was alright. That is scary. Thank God you were available!

I had a transport chair for my mom. I purchased it on QVC.

We tried using it on our block, all paved with the usual minor bumps and dips.

It magnified every bump and mom found it painful. They're better used in stores and such. Sidewalks too.

@Kachina624  Medicare does cover scooters but the person has to have a face to face evaluation with his/her doctor. The doctor has to fill out a specific form detailing the need. The patient has to pay the Medicare deductible if it hasn't already been met then a coinsurance of 20%.

The outfit providing the scooter must be Medicare certified.

The need is very specific and cannot just be for getting around for convenience if the patient has any mobility, such as being able to use a walker or cane. Plus type of illness.

Other requirements such as type of scooter and if additional payment may be required by the patient.

It's quite involved but they are usually covered.

Even some Advantage plans can apply.
