Oh Raven. I humbly apologize. In my mind the joke was on my daughter. I have watched documentaries before about all kinds of cultures. My dad served in Korea and he told us that often a sort of "hocking" sound meant a word in that language. Indeed I would think that someone who didn't know our language watched Americans talking would wonder if hour little hand gestures meant something.
The movie my dd watched was a documentary that was required viewing for the class.
Anyway, as I said, the laughing was at HER not at the tribe. But, I would again, humbly ask your forgiveness. It is easy for one to "step in it' when they haven't dealt with discrimination and bastardization of ones culture as you have.
Hope this makes sense. I'm on my way to an appt and had to type fast!

it's not a problem scottie and you have no need to ask forgiveness........I'm happy she's learning about the culture and right along with her, you'll learn too.......but often times when it's a part of a school required thing, you learn the history that has been approved by a government agency......which isn't always the truth......back to that history is written by thing lol.......you might want to check out your local area for native people groups, they often have meetings that you can attend and get a first hand view of what they are trying to accomplish as a people/culture.........check the internet for the Standing Bear Powwows in your area and attend one, talk to the people there........as a people we have two histories.........before and after...............................raven

Thank you raven. That is one of the requirements of the class that she visit something that has to do with native people. I'm so disappointed that the PowWow in our area won't take place until her class is over. Would like to go anyway when it comes up. I am a little leery that she is getting true info because of some things but so far I think she is learning a bit.

Scottie - My husband is Native American (Blackfoot) and I told him your story and he thought it was funny, as did I. ...just wanted to share another perspective.
