Skala  and Officer Alfonse J. Niedermeyer. They are missed. May they rest in peace.

@Boehm Collector  Your post brings tears.......I'm sorry for the loss of your friends.  It is 16 yrs already and I'm sure it still hurts.  Hugs........

Yes @Patriot3 it does still hurt.  One of the saddest things is that Al's wife found out she was pregnant shortly after her husband died.  So she now has a 15 year old daughter who never met her dad.  I cried like a baby when I found out.  John was the type of person who, if you told him you liked his shirt he would take it off and give it to you ..then go buy you a pair of pants to match!!   One of the most generous people I have ever met.  He was not only a police officer but an EMT.  On September 11th he was having back problems.  So his captain told him not to go to the WTC.  But John insisted because he felt he could do more for the injured as an EMT.   When he arrived at ground zero with another PO friend of mine they discovered they only had one air pack in the trunk.  Again John insisted on going in since he was an EMT.  If they had both gone in together they would both be gone.  The remains of John and Al were never found.  All that that was found belonging to John was his badge.

I've often wondered if as more and more time passes, and we get further and further away from the day of horror, if fewer families will attend the reading of the names.

Surviving spouses die, children grow up and start lives of their own.

Maybe they find the yearly event to be too difficult, or they have, for lack of a better word, moved on with their lives.

As for tv programs being a painful reminder for the families, no one is forced to watch the programs.

There are an infinite number of ways to spend the day, that don't involve a television.

Last night we saw Paul McCartney.  At the start of the concert he dedicated the concert to 9/11.  For the encore the band came out with a 9/11 banner and the American & British flags.  They played Yesterday.  Paul was in NYC on 9/11 and wrote the anthem for the first concert honoring all those who died, were injured or worked in some capacity to rescue those affected. It was extremely moving.
