I had to ask myself why this seemed so significant? My teacher was about to cry... cannot remember if it was then or after I got back home that this event heralded a new, more cruel time in American history; a time when Presidents could be shot, boys would be sent off to war, people would stage sit-ins and protests and the Beatles would bring England to America.

@LTT1  I edited a lot of your OP.

Kennedy was the last (of four) presidents to be assisinated while in office.

'Boys' were sent off to war by his successor LBJ.

Two thirds were volunteers going to Vietnam.  (That ration blows my mind.)  I'd always thought that they were all drafted!

WWII, many more were drafted and a little over a third volunteered.  The casualties were horrific, (over 400,000! volunteer and draftees).

Our (if you're of European descent) history, in the US, 'cruelty' really started after we landed....not when Kennedy was assassinated. jmoyvmv
