Another day of Pip Watch is upon us! After an evening of spring rain, Jackie left the nest this morning to head briefly to the Cactus Snag for some post-dawn stretching of her wings.
With perfectly timed precision, Shadow gleefully arrived to take over for his partner. He looked captivating as he patiently sat in the nest bowl with the breeze flowing through his nape feathers and the sun glistening upon his back.
Jackie returned to the nest with a swift landing and a talon full of fluff; they did a perfect switcheroo as Shadow sailed off from the Front Porch.
We caught a glimpse into the nest bowl as Jackie settled upon her clutch, one egg hidden from sight by the high rise panel she built the day before! It wasn’t long before she added more of her new fluff fixings, and gently gave both eggs a soft roll. It was time for her to settle in for the afternoon and share some cute eagle expressions with us from the nest tree.
Lunchtime brought us a fresh stick delivery from Shadow. He clumsily rubbed it across Jackie’s back and then placed it on the exterior of the nest framework.
When Jackie left for her midday break, we were treated to a beautiful close-up of the egg duo and a quick roll, before Shadow tucked in for another incubation session.
As the afternoon carried on, Jackie and Shadow resumed trading places on the Cactus Snag and alternated nest time. Never far out of sight, our graceful pair continued the constant care of their precious eggs in perfect unison with timely turns incubating and tucking in to securely cradle their clutch.
As the pip watch continues, we are so thankful for another day observing Jackie and Shadow’s world, what we may discover, and our shared love of our eagles .

I keep checking the webcam and noticed Jackie "attending" to the eggs a little differently the last day or two.
Maybe that's Momma's way of saying "Come on, Baby, we're here, waiting for you ..."

Yesterday afternoon, evening and throughout the night we heard little chirps coming from the chick. This indicates that the chick was able to break the internal membrane and took its first breath of air.
Today we spotted an apparent pip (breach in the eggshell) and hatching is in the works. You can see a bit of the shell popping out on the top of the egg on the right. It can take 24 to 48 hours after the initial pip for a complete hatch.
It’s getting egg-citing!!
Thank you for being with us on this amazing journey!

This is so exciting! It must be a lot of work for that little chick to break free!

This chick has broken the membrane and is now breathing air!
I read somewhere that the parents never help break the shell so the babe can get out.
Right now, the chick's job is to get out on its own and is using and strengthening its new "muscles" to be able to function outside the shell.
(I realize baby chicks don't think like humans, but I chuckled thinking this babe has broken some shell and is surprised to learn "hey, there's somebody out there!"). LOL
