Re: MARCH 2025 READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

[ Edited ]

I read The Empusium: A Health Resort Horror Story by Olga Tokarczuk, a Polish writer, activist, and winner of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Literature.  Set in Poland in 1913, the book follows a young student suffering from tuberculosis who goes to a health resort to recover.  The men at the resort hold lengthy discussions on Polish culture, politics, and the inferiority of women.,  As Olga says in the afterword, the misogynistic statements attributed to these fictional characters are actual quotes from famous men in history.

Slow at the beginning, disturbing events begin to happen in the resort and surrounding area.  The story blends horror, comedy and folklore.  I found the book very interesting, but I think it will not be for everyone.

I have read several of her books and the one I think will appeal to more readers is Drive Your Plow Over The Bones of the Dead. I absolutely love that book.

@smoky22 Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead was among the deals in today's Book Bub  offerings. I even remarked to DH that the title was unusual. Maybe I will give it a try.

@pateacher  I hope you like it if you get it.  I know the title sounds unusual, but it comes from a poem by William Blake.

Re: MARCH 2025 READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

Wrapping up the month of March in detective land.

Finished New York Dead (Stone Barrington, #1) by Stuart Woods last evening. This was one of hubby's favorite writers and characters, so decided to give it a whirl. Mystery/crime set in New York City.

Also, continuing the Jesse Stone series, High Profile by Robert B. Parker. Small town police chief (former Los Angeles detective) investigating murders that take place on his patch outside Boston.

Onward to April 2025 as Spring has sprung!
