Best books to read in winter?

I like to make TBR (to be read) lists for myself and enjoy reading books that fit the season.  Please share your best winter book recommendations, something where the winter setting is part of the story or a book that makes the most sense to read during the winter season.

I read fiction and nonfiction and will read a little bit of everything, but I specifically like mystery/thriller or literary fiction best.

Note: I'm not looking for Christmas book recs yet- more like winter, cold, snowy vibes.

As always, thanks for the input!

Interesting perspective.   I wonder if books that have been adapted and become a Hallmark movie would qualify?

I'm a huge fan of mystery series because I enjoy the character development from book to book.

The season doesn't really matter to me.  Some of my characters would likely opt for a private jet and fly to the tropics.  LOL

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah takes place in Alaska.  It is a great read with very real depictions of dealing with that harsh frozen environment.

"Nights in Rodanthe" by author Nicholas sparks.  A movie was made in early 2000, with Diane Lane and Richard Gere. What is better than that?

Boths were excellent.  It's not snowy but a big storm approaches the Carolinas.  Wonderful book as I've always Nicholas Sparks and his work.  And the movie with those two? The best!!Heart

Game of Thrones. Who could forget The White Walkers and the saying " Winter is Coming." It is a hefty book that can last all winter. Or if you are a speedy reader, there are several more books in the series.

Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher. The main character is engaging. Some Christmas but a lot of winter. Pilcher isn't

my favorite author as I tend towards mysteries but I really liked this book.

Re: Best books to read in winter?

Before I started keeping my huge database of books read by author, I think I read a Pilcher 500-page novel:

The Shell Seekers

so many, many years later I still remember the title but very little story until I read the synopsis.  While it may not play to winter....it is a book you will love to curl up with and dream of warmer weather to come.

Re: Best books to read in winter?

I love winter-themed books also and have a big TBR pile of mysteries.

There is an Icelandic writer whose name is Ragnar Jónasson.  Many of his books take place in the winter.  He has a couple of different series that are all page-turners!  He's often called the Icelandic Agatha Christie.  One I particularly liked is called "The Mist."  It's Book 3 of a series about a female policewoman.  I read this book in one sitting it was that good.

A non-fiction book that I re-read every winter is "The Stillness of Winter," by Barbara Mahany.  If you enjoy winter and snow, this is a must read!  Also "Winterlust: Finding Beauty in the Fiercest Season," by Bernd Brunner, another non-fiction.

Google the Icelandic custom of gifting books at Christmas.  On Christmas Eve they all open their gift (which is a book) and spend the night reading.  Aghhhh.  It's called Jolabokaflod.

Happy reading, cozy sweaters and blankets, candles, fireplace and hot chocolate season!!!!
