  • The scientific name for the tree that chocolate comes from, Theobroma cacao, means “food of the gods.”
  • In Mayan times the cocoa bean was used as currency as it was considered to be worth more than gold dust.
  • It takes approximately 400 cacao beans to make one pound of chocolate.
  • 100 lbs. of chocolate are eaten in the U.S. every second.
  • The world's biggest chocolate bar ever created weighed 12,770 lbs.
  • Chocolate’s scent increases theta brain waves, which induce relaxation. This is mainly why people feel better about their problems after eating loads of it.
  • Every Russian and American space voyage has included chocolate bars.
  • A chocolate river really exists...or rather did in 1971. The famous chocolate river Augustus Gloop almost drowned in in the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory film was made of 15,000 gallons of water mixed with chocolate and cream.
