Smithsonian Institution: National Museum of the American Indian

It was just about this time last year, when QVC premiered the first Smithsonian Institution show to great success!  I remember hearing that we were working on another program, based on the collections of the National Museum of the American Indian.  Well, a year has flown by and the premiere show of the Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of the American Indian will air on Tuesday September 6, at 6 PM Eastern.  For two hours we will share stories connected to the jewelry which is all new!  I had a chance to travel to the museum and share a tour with one of the museum’s curators, Ann McMullen. The informative videos we made that day will be available for viewing on QVC.com.

The museum was established by an act of Congress in 1989, and is the first national museum dedicated to the study of Native American cultures, histories and arts.  It is inspiring, and holds one of the most extensive collections of Native American arts and artifacts in the world.  I expected to see inspiration for Native American designs from the Southwestern portion of the United States, and I did.  Wait until you see some of the pieces inspired by Navajo designs, especially a stunning cuff!  But what amazed me was the fact that we will bring stories from people who lived from South America all the way to the far Northwest.  Look for incredible designs based on Aztec art from A.D. 1000, to bold designs based on Tlingit art from Alaska.

One room made me stop in awe, the South American Andes region in Peru.  My mother traveled to Peru in 1947, and brought back several silver pieces that influenced my love of silver that continues today.  Just wait till you see the earrings inspired by a bell, probably made from A.D. 200 to A.D. 600.   And, we have several pieces inspired by the work of Ben Nighthorse Campbell, jewelry designer and former United States Senator from Colorado.  It will be a moment you won't want to miss!  Remember the designs are all new, and all made in the USA, premiering September 6th at 6 PM Eastern for two hours. Can't wait!
